I participate on another website (Yahoo Answers) in which I came across a question from an atheist who wants to know about any non-religious organizations that work in defense of the sons and daughters of women who are considering abortion. Are there any non-religious organizations that work to stop abortion?

I suggested that she contact Catholic Charities in her city, and ask for suggestions. I explained that the Catholic Church, and individual Catholics, often work with others to help those in need, including working with some non-religious groups. As a Catholic myself, I can’t think of any non-religious groups that fight to defend the life of sons and daughters who still are inside their mothers. Do you know of any such organization? I have no idea what city this person is from.

Since this is such a simple question, I asked even though I might not be able to follow the thread tonight. I will check back in a little while, and again tomorrow morning.

Thank you for any help you might be able to offer!🙂

I am Roman Catholic.
Peace be with you.

A few years ago, when I was reading skeptical and humanist magazines, I noted the curious fact that abortion seemed to be one thing that freethinkers were not free to think about, except to approve of it. The humanist manifesto includes support for “women’s reproductive freedom,” which is of course code for abortion on demand. In my admittedly brief period of reading this material, I never once read any pro-life sentiments anywhere. The name “pro-life” was even avoided; we were “anti-abortionists.”
See if there is a Birthright chapter in your area; they may also be able to direct you to atheist pro-life groups, if there are any. Good luck finding them. Unitarians might know, though you may get a hostile response.

There are several websites that may be of interest, including:

Atheists and Agnostics Pro-Life League.
Feminists for Life.
Gays and Lesbians Pro-Life Alliance.
Libertarians for Life.

Not huge memberships in any of these groups, but they do exist.

Very typical of so-called humanists to be anti-human.

I’m going to investigate the online suggestions tomorrow. I want to be more awake when I do it. I have found the same tendency as mentioned by others - that most freethinking humanist atheists are not much in favor of the freedom of women to become mothers. They seem to tolerate motherhood like it’s an embarrassing blot on humanity. I have read only a few brief essays from self-labeled feminists that openly regard motherhood as a legitimate lifestyle choice for women.

As for the suggestions about the Unitarians, I agree that the response likely would be unfriendly, even hostile to a pro-life Catholic. That’s not necessarily true, but likely.

I will do a better web search tomorrow for some leads, since I think the person who asked for information might be genuine in her stated interests. Honestly, I am surprised at how pro-abortion most atheists and humanists seem to be. Their interests often include defending wildlife and pets, which makes it seem almost bizarre to me that they can be so indifferent to young human life, and to the problems of women and girls who are pregnant but don’t want to be pregnant. It seems brutally cold to me to tell a woman in that situation to kill her son or daughter, no matter his or her age.

Thanks for the responses.
I appreciate the suggestions.
I will search for details online tomorrow.

Thank you to all for your help. I relayed the information to the person who asked about this, and she was grateful. In this case I felt especially glad to help a person, even though she had an expressed strong atheist bias. Firstly, it can be only good if she acts to help defend humanity from the horrible suffering of abortion. Secondly, I suspect that anyone who participates in pro-life anti-abortion activities is likely to encounter many Christians who are actively practicing their faith. I think that is a good thing for everyone to experience, especially atheists.

Peace be with you all.🙂
