The concept of oblivion and the state of being oblivious are interesting.I’m kind of suprised though that there as far as I know of I dont think I know of any like philosophical thoughts concerning it or any philosophers who have said something about it.A question I thought about it recently was does it tie into existentialism?.If anyone can explain to me what oblivion is exactly and stuff to that effect I would appreciate that.Thank you very much so and God bless.

‘Oblivion’ arises from the Latin word for forgetting. To go into oblivion is to be gone and forgotten; i.e., to be gone without a trace, in essence, to cease being.

The origins of this word can be seen in the French word ‘oublier’, to forget; and ‘oubliette,’ a dungeon of the sort used in Medieval France, where captives were thrown to be forgotten about. There, of course, these unfortunates ultimately ceased being, as far as human life goes.

So there is no “being in a state of oblivion” as you put it. Being and oblivion are opposites. If you go into oblivion, your being ends. You vanish without trace; no mind, no body, no life – zero!!!

The concept is a major part of existentialism, aiui. To an existentialist, you come out of oblivion at birth, and return to it when your breathing stops. Whatever “you” amount to in the meantime is counted entirely upon your actions in life; you have no other value.
While they may not have used the word ‘oblivion’, the idea has a very large footprint in modern thinking and in the arts.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA.

I guess I’d ask for you to elaborate?

As the above poster stated, oblivion is simply a lack of existence. What particular aspect of that are you interested in knowing about?

Most materialistic philosophy assumes oblivion of consciousness before birth and after death, is that more what you mean?
