Good Afternoon,
When my son was born in 2005 I made a poor decision in assigning his Godparents. I had not been to confession in over a decade and can only attest my cloudy judgment to the fact that my own soul was filthy. Since confessing my sins in 2013 and jumping back into my catholic faith I have done some soul searching.
The Godparents for my son are non-practicing Catholics AND the Godfather and the Godmother both claim to be gay. The Godfather is living with a man and the Godmother is “married” to a woman. (of course we do not recognize the marriage as valid) WOW! I knew the Godfather had attractions to males when we asked him to be the Godfather. In my fogged up world then, I was hoping that his sponsorship would push him back into the church…the same goes for the Godmother. Wrong on both counts.
I do pray for them both but am ashamed that I chose them. I have read that Godparents cannot be replaced. Is this true? Well, what if my intentions were right but my choice was wrong? Can I assign new sponsors who truly live their faith? I am very stressed that my son is starting to ask about his Godparents. God bless You and Yours.
