Is there any time that one cannot give to the church?

Say that there is a church collection, should one give money to it (since it is for the upkeep of the pastor I think)? Or should you not if you don’t have any money physically on you but you could retreive some? I ask because as I have read it is a duty to give oblations for priests but I observe that sometimes myself and others don’t give because we simply don’t have any money with us at the time. But yet, if it’s a duty and precept one cannot not do it so would I have to get some money?

That one should at least some times give to the church.

Or that one should give whatever one has on hand no matter how little to the church…

but the latter doesn’t seem to make sense since the church doesn’t (I guess) want non-liquid items (toys, clothes) nor does it seem that one should go out of their way to donate small sums like cents etc.?

But I hope this connects to the OP:shrug:
 
not sure I understand the question

you are never required to donate to any specific collection, or on any given Sunday, or to any specific cause (mission, special collection, building fund drive etc.)

you are required to contribute to the support of the Church, but it is entirely up to you what form that support takes–which part is monetary, which is service of time and talent, how much, when etc. Make the best prudential decision you can given your own situation.

Well I think what I was trying to get across is that giving is an act of love. Certainly the Church needs funds in order to carry out its work, in order that we might have a priest and lights and heating etc. As the community that forms a Church, we are responsible for making sure we play our part in providing these things for all. However God accepts alms, if they are corresponding to each one’s abilities; and the more able a man is, the more must he bestow in charities. The widow’s mite was very acceptable to God, and very meritorious to herself; because though small the offering considered in itself, it was great considering her extreme indigence. The pennies of the poor are just as meritorious as the millionaire who gives a relatively small amount. What is important is the intention.

We should give what we can. If we have nothing to give, then the Church expects nothing. God’s grace is free, He gives it out of love. The money we give to the Church is our support for the Church on earth who needs the finances to function here.

Sometimes what I do is give a bigger amount on some weeks and not give on other weeks. I’ve been planning on giving just one big amount monthly on a cheque rather than write a cheque every week.

Your question may be one of logistics. Each week we take up a collection. Whether or not you put anything into the basket is irrelevant. Whether or not you give is relevant. Many people give via envelopes. So, they contribute one check per month instead of weekly. Many others give via direct withdraw from their checking account, in parishes that offer that. So, they don’t physically put anything into the basket at all. Still others give every week and put in the basket either check or cash.

You should establish your budget for giving and include regular Sunday collection (upkeep and running of your specific parish), special offerings (for the Church missions), and diocesan contributions (bishop’s annual appeal). Add all that up, and divide by 12, or 52, or whatever number. Decide how you are going to give-- by envelope, cash, check, auto pay, or a combination. Make sure you indicate how much is for various special collections so the money is allocated properly.

And, if there is an unscheduled special collection on a day when you are unprepared-- no cash, didn’t bring the checkbook, etc.-- and you want to contribute then you can mark an envelope the next week and deposit it in the collection or mail a check to the parish office during the week.

You don’t have to physically put something in the collection plate every week. There are lots of ways to arrange support of the parish and its works.
