Is there anyone here who was looking into Hinduism and Buddhism but found reason not to convert?

Yeah, I recently had a dream in which I converted to Hinduism. Moreover, I read the Bhagavad Gita and was amazed by it. I guess what turns me off is the fact that you are your own God-- there is no central authority, nor is there a book of Scripture that everyone follows. It’s basically you going on your own path and no one tells you what to do.

I can imagine that to be very seductive to people who are tired of being threatened by Hellfire. As christians, we need to do a better job of sharing our faith. It’s not about a God who wants to take from you-- it’s about a God that wants to give to you. Even His commandments are a gift to us.

I have explored them both thoroughly and there is a lot I like in them. But also too much that is a little weird. I am more at home where I am and focused on Jesus. But I do bring a new perspective to my old faith as a result of encounter with these other religions. For that reason I am probabaly considered heterodox by many here. I feel more at home with people like Thomas Merton, Bede Griffiths, Richard Rohr, Thomas Keating, and others.

I’ve read the dhammapada and gita more than a few times (I prefer the gita). I was attracted to the spiritual practices of the Buddhist monks and Hindu holy men. But, geographically speaking, it would have been a pretty difficult conversion. And there was still some philosophical stuff I just couldn’t get behind. It was my experiences with these two religions that really made me question Protestantism (there were other reasons as well).
