Is there anyone that actually likes the guitar at Mass?

Aramis, could you please post the link to the document in which the Catholic Church banned the piano?

While I was recovering from my surgery this spring and summer, I read several histories of Catholic Church music, most of which were written before Vatican II. I don’t recall reading about the ban on piano.

Last reference I had for that is Norton Anthology of Western Music. Referenced when I was a music major. Don’t have any citations (nor my copy of NAWM) handy.

OK I admit it, I like to watch the Gather Home Coming Gospel hour on Saturday Evenings. Those folks can sing!

I also like Lenny Leblanc, who I just recently came across and I have two of his CD’s.

This music for the most part, wouldn’t make it in a Mass. However, there may be some hymns that could work for meditation after communion.

Anyway now you know. I’m a heretic.

I’m always reading here in the forums of people lamenting the removal of high altars, communion rails, and choir lofts. Where do people live that the churches are old enough to have ever had such features in the first place? Do most people here actually attend Mass in pre-Vatican II buildings?

Most midwestern towns and cities (like where I live) have tons of old Catholic churches. I live within ten minutes of about five churches built pre-Vatican II, some within walking distance of eachother because different ethnic groups built them. The church I regularly attend was built in the early 60’s to replace an older building, and consequently it has a Gothic high altar and some other artwork taken from the old building.

As for music, I’m okay with any instrument played well if it adds to the mass and doesn’t distract. I quite love the organ.
