Is there anything wrong with Mass at 6:00 pm on Sunday?

They wouldn’t hold it, nor call it Sunday Mass, if it didn’t!

Sunday, liturgically speaking, runs from sundown Saturday to midnight Sunday. It is the only day of the week so lengthened. So it’s not like Monday liturgically begins at sundown Sunday or anything.

What gives you that idea?

Not at all. Most every church that holds an evening Mass round here will begin it at 6 pm. And many churches here and in the US and elsewhere hold 7pm, 8pm, 9pm masses on Sundays.

There’s even one in my diocese (located next to a major hospital and near one of the Universities) that holds a 10.30pm Mass on Sundays to permit people to meet their obligation who otherwise wouldn’t be able to.

Note that all Solemnities, which includes all the Holy Days of Obligation and several others, are so lengthened. I am sure you know that, but I anticipate the next post would be regarding 6pm masses on Holy Days of Obligation.}
 
Down the years i have often gone to Sunday Mass at 6pm.
In fact,there was a time i went to 9pm Sunday Mass in our city centre Jesuit Church.At that time,an old Jesuit about 90 years old
in 1980 gave us the opportunity for Confession,though it was not an official time for Confession.He would sit in a confessional at the back of the church from just after 8.30pm till Communion Time

This priest(Father Alex Gits) was seen as a Saint.He was English,but had a Belgian father and an Italian mother…
 
I used to live in a college town and we had a10:oo pm mass on Sunday.

You are correct in the sense that the ancient church would certainly have thought of nightfall as Monday.

In the East that would still apply. The Roman church has made some adjustments over the years. 🙂

In fact, some scholars have maintained that the typical liturgy in the Apostolic and ante-Nicene period was sometime between nightfall on the seventh day and sunrise on the “eighth” day! 👍

The migration of the liturgy to that late on a Sunday seems a bit drastic, but apparently there is some pressing need…
 
Nothing at all. St. John’s University/College of St Benedict has a student mass during the school year each Sunday at 9pm and it has a large turnout.
 
Sometimes I go to an 8:00 PM Mass. It fulfills the Sunday obligation.
 
I actually have been thinking about this…though I know it counts for Sunday Mass. I remember going to a 5:00 and a 6:00 P.M. Mass. I went to a Southern Baptist Church in the morning. Talk about a mix.
