my husband has agreed to move us back to south carolina (yay!!!) and i cant wait to do all the things i used to do…

one of the things i always did was sing in my choir at my parish and sing at a baptist choir for a later service… i do this because i have always pursued an interest in singing, and i was a voice minor in college… i like the jazz rhythms and intonations of baptist choirs, and i like the classicism of my own Catholic parish… it is also an excellent way to exercise my voice… so I have joined both…

is this disobedience to the Holy Father? I do not join in the baptist services but i remain respectful and quiet… they do not mind my presence at all and do not try to convert me, but i do not want to disobey the Holy Father.

i was afraid of this… what bothers me is that there are few opportunities to sing jazz or blues pieces that aren’t dirty or immoral… i thought maybe this was a better way of enjoying this part of music…

is there a good way of going about making it clear I only testify to the Catholic Church? i do not wish to insult anyone, and i do hope to continue singing without being asked to leave… maybe i should view this as an opportunity to explain, i just do not know how…

any ideas?

on a side note does anybody else sing to their husbands? i like to sing to my husband and hold his head in my lap at night… i feel so bad because my husband has a very stressful job and i think it helps him unwind and relax at the end of his day…

As to singing in a baptist choir, it is certainly not forbidden. In fact, if your Catholic faith is strong, you may be a very effective witness to the baptists that Catholics are not the cannibalistic, statue-worshiping, works-centered, faith-deficient, bible-ignorant cultists we’ve been made out to be. Just by being the lovely person you are and letting them know you are a faithful Catholic may get them to doubt what they’ve been taught. They may even ask you questions about your beliefs. Once they figure out that they’ve been lied to about one thing, then everything else comes into question as well.

BTW, my Mom’s side of the family are all Southern Baptists and my uncle is a well-known SB preacher. They have the wildest misconceptions about Catholics - you just wouldn’t believe it.

Both have good points. Personally, I prefer to stay at my parish. There are different ways to evangelize without causing scandal.

Oh I believe it about the southern baptists…I was raised in that environment. Some of the stuff I was taught a child…a bunch of nutters if you ask me I’m almost glad I came here, I think I’m getting a more realistic view of catholicism than what I was originally taught. Its all quite interesting. By no means are my beliefs changing…but I’m kinda sorta understanding your guys’ beliefs a bit better I think

gracias for your answers… i totally agree about baptists believing some very bad things about the Church. everybody knows me and is very respectful but sometimes when there are new members to their church i am viewed suspiciously… it is a megachurch and many of these people live in the city i am from so i see them in town too…

but very hurtful things have been said before and i try not to say anything… the preacher called the Holy Father ‘satans vicar’ and i broke into tears, hundreds of people stared at me which was paralyzing but the people around me in the choir were wonderful and they helped me get out so i would not be more embarassed. i think something said something because the pastor apologized to me in his office…

i think it is a fortunate thing though because i do not know if anything would have been said to him if i were not there and offended… and with the sudden and inexplicable tensions between blacks and latinos in many parts of the south there is that element too… but anyway, even though i do not participate except for the choir they do like me and ask questions sometimes so maybe my presence is a good thing… but i just dont know…

on a very different note (joke) does anybody know who the highest ranking cleric is on the forum? like are there any bishops or anything? i think that would be really interesting!
