I’ve been doing a lot of thinking since the debacle of yesterday’s papal mass, and I’m wondering if there will ever be anyway to get the liturgical abuses eliminated. Since there’s no “liturgical police” to go around making sure that everyone follows the guidelines, there’s no way to get things under control. Even an orthodox bishop can’t be everywhere at all times. It seems like there have been attempts to reform the liturgy since St. Pius X with little effect. And I know (based on personal experience) that there are many people who would be offended if someone were to suggest that they can’t use their culture’s secular or Protestant-based music during mass and would cry “racism” if they were told they needed to use chant or polyphony. I don’t see any end in sight to this mess. I just feel very discouraged.
