I’m going to answer some of the questions in the order I read them.

The only thing I have at my finger tips right now are notes I have from a paper I wrote on Mary Magdalen. The books that I took it from were borrowed from my professor and a fellow student. I will try to contact my professor and see if I can get the complete book title and author…

‘The term prostitute came from the word hierodulae (Starbird 29) (also spelled hetairai) meaning a “highly sophisticated courtesans … who offered intellectual and musical entertainment as well as sex” (H Book 465). They were many times called temple priestesses. By that definition it is shown the hierodulae were much more than common whores, they were an intricate part of mens’ lives and in return society. She would be the person the men confided in, asked advice from, that were entertained by, and yes were pleasured by.’

At that time sex was not considered a sin. It was an important part of daily life. Mary spent her days at the temple. She did this to make a living as a seamstress. The likely hood of her doing more is high. There was nothing wrong with this. Since this wasn’t a sin or ever thought to be wrong she still would have been without sin. It is something hard for people to understand. You have to think of the way they lived thier lives back then, not we are taught today.
Ah, so it was MM that you thought was a prostitute. Thats what got everyone riled up.🙂

Now I may sound stupid, but who is that? (If any of you are like me you are probably disagreeing with my thoughts and think I’m stupid already.)
He wrote The DaVinci Code, the principal belief being Jesus and MM had children and the line decends to today. Its been torn apart by many books.

Second I believe Mary is the mother of God and that she was without sin. I also feel that there is a very likely chance that she was a heterae and possibly not a physical virgin.
Look, she clearly meant Mary the Mother of God here. Sex ouside of marriage was always a sin, by the way; I’m not sure what you meant by sex not being a sin back then:confused: .

Did you mean Mary Magdalene by the above quote?

Where is your LOVE everyone. She needs to be educated not attacked.
  1. Scarlet, what you have defined as your beliefs are not the same as the Catholic Church, this is why some people have turned a little nasty. It is probably the same reason you dont get along with Catholics in general.
  2. The Church condemns homosexuality. Do you realise why? Our Lord gave us sexual organs for creation of new human beings. Those who are homosexual are using their gift of life for mere self-gratification. It is inherently wrong, and that is why we dont believe in allowing any sexual contact between two people of the same sex. While sex is enjoyable, between a man and a woman, it should never be for self gratification but for giving yourself to your spouse in the interest of creating new life. This is why homosexuality is wrong. Maybe you feel that two men should be able to love each other, the truth is we should all love each other as much as we love Jesus, or at least attempt to. The reason why two men should not be “in love” is that in this day and age to be in love means to have sex, ESPECIALLY where homosexuals are concerned, because they disregard some of the Churches basic teachings.
  3. If Mary wasnt a virgin then in all honesty one can seriously doubt the credibility of Jesus. He was just another man. The virgin birth is not only a witness to Gods power but also a symbol that, i believe, is linked back to the Old Testament. (It has something to do with the Ark, someone else may know something about it).
  4. While it is possible that she fell “in love” with Jesus, Jesus himself would never EVER be “in love” with a sinner. He loved her, of course, but to suggest that THE SON OF GOD had lustful thoughts and even had children with and about a sinner is VERY WRONG.
5)See here for further documented proofs that her and Jesus were not an item:

catholic.com/thisrock/2000/0009fea2.asp
  1. I also stated that the only person that I have discussed my views with was my Mom. So I don’t think anyone would have problems with them because they don’t know what I believe.
  2. My only confusion with this arguement is that are married heterosexual people that specifically do not have sex while the woman is ovulating going to hell? They are preventing the conseption of a child.
  3. Saying that she possibly had intercourse is not the same as saying that a man impregnated her. My point is that the way of life was different then than it is now.
  4. Why is it wrong for Jesus to LOVE her? What is lustful about being in love. I never said that they had children together. I have researched the ‘rumors’ of the child Sarah and have not found any proof to make me believe it is the truth.
  5. I tried that like, but I got an error about my server timing out or something like that. Forgive me I’m not very comp savvy. I will check out the links later.

Thank You, I read the post about him after I responded. I have not read that book. I have heard that it is a good book by Catholics and non-Catholics alike. I was told you will either come close to the church or start to question it more. From my understanding of the theory I don’t agree.

REMEMBER, the devil tries to change our beliefs constantly, it is not wrong to think that what you hold true now is right, it is only natural to defend your current beliefs, BUT the devil has ingrained them upon you, it is up to you to push him out. Is has been said that the Devil uses three main weapons:

Tolerance(of others actions and beliefs)
Adaptation(to include others and their actions and beliefs)
Change(Changing our beliefs to fit in with others)

These three are VERY dangerous and have already infiltrated the church. Without being harsh, scarlet, your current beliefs are wrong and you cannot be a true Catholic unless you realise why they are wrong and cease to believe in them.

Three things to do :

Pray
Pray
Pray

The best cure for anything. You have taken the first step by coming to this forum, now complete the action by pushing the falsehoods out and letting Jesus back in.

I will pray for you.

Andre.
I don’t feel what you are saying about me is in the least bit true. The 3 things you stated are not about me. I just want to learn about all biblical figures as real people with real lives. Oh and I do PRAY PRAY PRAY.

First I work all day. What do you mean the silence is getting louder? I can’t sit in front of the comp all day waiting for a responce.

The second part I already addressed.
No, you didn’t. Please specify WHO you believe was a temple priestess: Mary the Mother of God or Mary Magdelene.
Thank you

Mary the Mother of God. I thought I had already said that. I referenced Mary Magdalene because that was the only place I had a basic definition of a heterae.

I think you are running into trouble with other Catholics because some of the beliefs you espouse are against the teachings of the Church.

What we believe is in the Creed. We believe Mary was a physical virgin, that she was conceived without sin and was not a temple prostitute. We believe what the Holy Scripture states about her - she describes herself as someone who has never had sex when she talks with the Angel. I believe Mary.

No one has ever said Jesus did not love Mary Magdalen. He loved her in the same way He loves me. That is what is so fabulous about this deal - Jesus loves me today just as He loved Peter and John and Mary and His Holy Mother.

You are a very intelligent and learned woman. I think that wonderful. WHy not do what I am doing right now? I made a committment to read 15 minutes worth of the Catechism every day. It is very readable and very informative. I have never read through the entire document before - it is on line at the Vatican website. Maybe you are not so goofy as you think…

As for the idea of the secular world not engaging in the Sacrament of Marriage, I happen to think the government should keep their nose out of the Church myself. That way if people want to enter into ridiculous unions and pay taxes together go ahead. But don’t call it marriage. And don’t call it a Marriage License. Call it what it is - a disolvable contract between people who do not believe in Natural Law.

Let those of us who believe in the Sacrament of Marriage get our civil union licenses and then receive the Sacrament of Matrimony from the Holy Mother Church.

Sorry everyone - the bombing in London has me crabby and not feeling very good about people in general right now. Forgive me and please keep me in your prayers so I can forgive these murderers.

Having said that, I now have to write you off as either a smarta$$ or a blasphemer. You’re obviously a very young individual who has fallen under the spell of our “esteemed” academia. I certainly hope you wake up soon.
Temple Priestess, Sacred Sexual Practitioner, Temple Prostitute, it makes no difference, first century Judaism had only one word for them and that is: Whore.
Mary, the Mother of my God and my Saviour WAS NOT A WHORE. There is NO WAY the eternal creator God would have granted Mary the grace of Immaculate Conception, only to have her fall into the category of temple prostitute.
You, my dear, are no Catholic. As for where you can go, I’m sure some new age, wiccan conglomerate would gladly take you in.

p.s and for those of you who think I’m too harsh, too bad.

scarletmommy,

From reading all your posts it seems to me that you have significant issues with what The Church teaches. If this is the case, I suggest 2 possible “places to go”.
  1. Learn what The Church really teaches, and why, and accept it.
  2. Find a church that is more in line with your beliefs.
I would strongly suggest the 1st option since I hate to encourage people to leave the church that Jesus founded. But why would you be Catholic if you disagree with some important theological points?

Dear Scarlet,

I really don’t know what to tell you, except that you are very VERY illinformed. First of all this has got to be the first time I have ever, EVER heard some refer to Our Lady as being a whore! I cring at even having to type that statement. I am not sure where you get your information but never was it okay to be whore! You are aware that the Ten Commandments came way before Mary was born. People and women for that matter were stoned to death for prositution. The Sixth commandment Thou shall not comment Adultry forbides such an action. How could anyone ANYONE, Catholic or Protestant ever say that they believe that their Lord God and Savior was born to a whore! You really need to do some growing up and reviewing your research! And before you go out spewing such trash as this I really hope you try to review your ideas and try to take a history lession first! :tsktsk:

I’m more “realistic” in my beliefs
This may be the most absurd statement of all (and you’ve made some pretty absurd ones on this thread).

You need to get real. What the Catholic Church teaches is real. What modern pop culture teaches is garbage.😦 So is whatever you make up with absolutely nothing behind it.:nope:

scarletmommy:
Maybe it is in part where I live, but Catholics I tend to meet are very judgemental, rude, and inconsiderate to others beliefs. Such as if you are not Catholic you are going to Hell.
No one should be telling you “if you are not Catholic you are going to Hell.”

I know a person who does not want to take the time to learn about Catholicism, any other branches of Christianity, or any religion. Consequence? He thinks negatively and thinks everyone is a loser, including in a non-religious environment. No one wants to be around him.

Maybe the solution is to find a religion that is more in line with your beliefs. Good luck!

I knew we were in trouble when I saw you reference Starbird. She is not a real scholar and describes her own books as fantasies. If a professor presented such books to you as scholarly, you were cheated out of your tuition.

Read some real (even non-Catholic) history of 1st century Palestine, and you will see that there was no temple prostitution among the Jews. If you believe Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was one, then you should not present yourself as Catholic. The members of this forum have shown remarkable restraint to have not savaged your ideas more than they have.

I pray you will prefer the truth of the Catholic Church over the fantasy history you have been reading. I hope you will stick around CAF to learn what that truth is, and that when we react strongly to your ideas, we do so out a love for Truth and the hope you will find it.

I am sorry if this truth hurts – but know that it won’t harm, only heal.

Thank YOU - I had overlooked what she referenced and remember those days back at Berkeley when we would be handed books that had no real scholarship and asked to just exercise our minds. It was fun! I guess the difference was that we were asked to remember that the books were not based in any facts.

Again, I believe that Mary would not have told the Angel that she had never known man unless that were true. And I think that Mary Magdalen’s relationship with Jesus was one of love - in the sense of Agape - because of her willingness to serve the Apostles and spread the news and then live a contemplative life for as long as she did.

To start off I’m a born and raisied Catholic. My problem is I don’t get along with very many Catholics. At least 4 out of 5 that I meet just rub me the wrong way. At times I am almost embarassed to think that I share a Religion (one that means the world to me) with them. I’m more “realistic” in my beliefs and I don’t think people like that. Does anyone know a nice site (possibly geared to a younger audience) that I would feel comfortable with?

Is there just a ghost of a chance that the problem is in you, and not in others 🙂 ?

We’re fixing all that. Come on in and join the cafeteria Catholics’ open party at the Guild house. A bunch of orthodox crashed the party, but we’re all sharing hats so we’re having a good time and fellowship, occasionally mixed with heated debate. That’s what happens when you open the tap.

Speaking of tap, have a glass of water, tea, beer, wine, of whatever you prefer – or if you prefer, or course, skip it. Come on in and join us and we’ll commiserate on how people are and see if we can come up with ways of dealing with it.

Your hostess, Penny Plain, is someone most admire for her passion but some seem to despise her views. You can come in whichever you go on that judgment. Talk it up, or sit back and lurk. It’s all good. Praise God for CA Forums!

You don’t have to doubt anything the Church teaches to come in and have some good fellowship, some spirits, and finger sandwiches.

Alan

Do those (self-styled) trads get to come too 🙂 ? I hope not: but they are as selective as any of us - they merely make different choices from others in the cafe.

IMO, we are all Cafeteria Catholics anyway 🙂 🙂 🙂 ##

My problem is I don’t get along with very many Catholics.
Gee … I wonder it that has anything to do with you asserting our Mother to be a whore. To be honest, I’ve yet to get along with folks who call my mother a whore. I don’t think I want to.

So now that we have proven that most of you (not all since I have noticed a few that seem genuinly nice) have your pretty little panties on a little too tight. Does anybody know a site or forum that I can go to talk with nice people about everything. I recently changed churches and the one I attend has programs for kids, teens, and a quilting circle. There is nothing for those in between. I have search everywhere that I have found online and I just can find anything that is keeping my attention.
