Is There Getting To Be a "Cool Factor" To Being Gay - Especially Among the Young?

I answered, “yes, very much”.

I have young cousins who think its “cool” to be gay/and or support gay marriage. After all, the celebrities say its okay. 🤷

Regarding the way bisexuality is being promoted toward teenage girls and young women now, I don’t think it has anything to do with Wicca and everything to do with promoting immoral, oversexualized attitudes. Not to mention the fact that you’ve got tons of guys out there now telling girls it’s not wrong, that they need to do it to show him they love him, etc. I know several girls/women who have had bisexual experiences to varying degrees and each time was either for shock value, to turn a guy (or guys) on, or because their boyfriend/spouse told them to do it to prove how much they cared about him. Despite how it’s portrayed in the media, each one I know felt demeaned and violated afterward.
Exactly. Ironically, using female bisexuality to turn on guys (myself unfortunately included so feel free to take this figurative gun and shoot me with it once I’m finished) is something meant to cater to twisted heterosexual senses.

On the bright side, you can’t accuse me of homophobia anymore because lesbians are homosexuals too. I can’t have a psychological fear of something I actually find gravely and sinfully tempting.

Okay, you can all shoot me now. Please. :banghead:

It is an important question.

Yes, many people in our society seek to glamorize sin, especially the sin of sodomy.

It is important to realize that “gay” is a word which was specifically chosen by homosexuals in order to make unnatural vice more palatable, and they have been successful with the effort. This is born out in polls, when people are asked: Do you approve of “gay” marriage? More say yes, then when asked if they approve of homosexual marriage.

Gay means happy. The extent to which the word is now used otherwise, is the result of a deliberate effort to distort language, and more importantly distort morality.

As the OP accurately points out, the portrayal of homosexuality does indeed matter very much. So, as Catholics, we should lead the way in using appropriate and clear language to discuss issues.

Homosexuality.
Sodomy.
Unnatural Vice.

Those words fit. “Gay” doesn’t unless you are talking about how happy someone is.

I think gay people do honestly face a lot of torment, though less than they used to because they have more sympathy and defenders than they used to. There is a growing acceptance of homosexual behavior and a growing trend to believe an either/or fallacy. Either you are a bigot who torments and bullies homosexuals or you see homosexual activities as perfectly legitimate behavior that is simply a part of the diversity of the human race. As such, to contradict the either/or fallacy, we have to work to show total love and acceptance of homosexuals while standing up for our belief that homosexual acts are immoral.
Well put! :clapping:

@ svid2 - I’ll go ahead and leave my screen name 3DOCTORS - unless I manage to tick off some people between now and then and have to hide. :frighten: LOL 😃

I’m having a hard time absorbing this question. Is it cool to be gay?

Meaning to pretend to be gay?

Or to be out of the closet?

I think it may be cool to be in favor of LGBT politics, but the cliques in which a teen would be tempted to fake being gay or bisexual for the sake of social advancement are far outnumbered by the cliques in which actually admitting to a deep-seated sexual attraction to members of your own gender would be somewhere between a social handicap and a social suicide.

That doesn’t mean some teen might not try it or that some teens might not confuse sexual curiousity with sexual orientation, because the teen brain is an inexplicable thing even to teens, but as life really plays out I believe there are still far more gay teens staying in the closet than straight teens pretending sexual attractions they don’t feel in order to score social points. Let’s face it: teens have a hard time admitting that they like different music than everyone else. What sized group of gays would have to be out and in an advantageous social position before that minority started to attract large numbers of false members?

As for teens who actually and truly have deep-seated attractions for their own gender, I hope they don’t feel as if that information is either something the general public needs to know or else information that would buy them social persecution if it were known. Heaven forbid that it attract physical persecution, but that is still far from rare, especially among young men. 😦

If you really want to be shot, go into a lesbian bar and tell anyone who will listen that you can’t be homophobic simply because you envision lesbians in a favorite personal sexual fantasy that involves you. Someone might be inclined to do her part to remove your future capacity to commit any number of sexual sins.

Seriously, the next time you feel gravely tempted to articulate a thought like that, just don’t. You’ll be safer in so many ways!

It’s just my way of saying how stupid the whole LGBT agenda thing is. They make up labels that lack consistency. They think that they’re immune to the depravity of heterosexual tendencies. They sound convincing at first because of their large media megaphone but when you actually sit down and even try to view this from a more philosophical perspective, you’ll realize people are just being fed a buffet of emotional appeals.

Besides, I know very well how what I just said would infuriate lesbians. It’s actually a potent (albeit last-resort) argument of mine if someone ever decided to pull the homophobe card on me (which by itself is also a last-resort argument). It angers them but hey, it’s hard to deny the logic that you can’t accuse me of fearing something that actually tugs the darker side of me.

Oh, please. Quit trollin’ me, buddy. You cannot possibly be that clueless.

If you are, consider that stupidity has never been defeated by the addition of more stupidity.

Just sayin’.

Ironically, that’s how troll battles usually go… which is pretty much what you can say to describe any ‘debate’ surrounding homosexuality. Thankfully, I’ve only ever had to use my Troll Mode in this manner once or twice. (In all cases, I can attest that it shut some people up. Not that I like the price of integrity that I had to pay. -_-;; )

Well, yes, that and the unfortunate truth that shutting people up is not Christianity’s ultimate goal. Getting them to heaven is the ultimate goal. It is not uncommon for the achievement of one pf those goals to work entirely against the other.

As Steven Covey likes to put it: The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing, and the main thing is to get every stupid soul on the earth under the sway of the Heavenly Throne of Grace…including yours and mine! 😉

I don’t think being gay is a “Cool Factor” at all. I believe its because in this day and age, the world is becoming more peaceful. If you look at the past, if you were a homosexual, you would probably get beat or worse, get shot.

The thing I’m not getting is how to these gay guys attract all the women? I thought they were suppose to be gay? I guess this whole gay thing could be more of a “Strategic Factor” just to look like a pimp and get all the women.:newidea:

No, methinks the answer is more obvious. :\ At least in my country, girls like gay companions because they’re just another type of gal pal to have fun with. You know… shopping, hairstyling, nail polish and all the other stuff you would never get guys like me to do with you unless we engage on a 1-on-1 mystical duel to the death first. XP

There is something attractive about men who look at your face when they talk to you, too. 😉

I have two neices, age 15 and age 13. Both very into the cool factor of being gay. Their facebook pages are full of positive comments about the gay culture.

Obviously they are very young but this is what they talk about to friends their age because it’s cool to them.

ummm people are still getting beat and shot for being gay. no one should get shot and beat bc of anything no matter being gay. you know.

Also, think of the female talk show host(esses) - Rosie, Ellen - how their popularity and likeability makes their lesbian lifestyles seem cozy, domestic, mainstream. They are likeable people. And I’m not saying we should aim to cultivate a dislike of anyone - but the celebrities have an influence.

It’s hard even to write about stuff on this thread, even as its originator, without sounding like I’m saying be mean or shun those who ID as “gay” and are very “out” and so forth. It goes to show how much of a social grey area and sticky issue this has all become. How if you say anything against the homosexual lifestyle choice or whatever you want to call it, you are branded as a hater even though you really are just trying to love all people as Christ taught but also uphold the truths He upheld.

I think if Jesus had wanted to say homosexual relationships/acts were okay/equivalent to heterosexual marriage, He would have made a point of saying so and it would’ve been very unmistakeable. For that matter, same goes for fornication, extramarital affairs, etc. If Jesus was the radical that some would like to paint Him as, overturning all those silly old-fashioned restrictive rules, we would’ve known about it long before the 20th-21st Centuries A.D.

Just say “Sorry. God loves you, no but’s”.

Invite her to come to Church with you, if you want to evangelize her.
