Is there love in hell?

Eternal suffering in hell is always escalating. I don’t believe there is a pause in it to even consider love. Even thinking of relief is not possible because it gets worse by the second. Opinion only , Tim

If there is no love at all in hell, then how can its inhabitants love the life they have lost, or the God they have missed out on spending eternity with? If they don’t love their own lives or God, or even long for the beatific vision, then how can the punishment of hell have any effect on their emotions.
I think you are confusing love and desire. Love is other centered, desire is more self centered, and lust is inordinate desire.

The more you practice loving others, the more you experience heaven on earth, and the more you are preparing your soul for union with God, Who is Love.

The more you are wrapped up in your own desires and attractions for that which will pass away, the further and further you move away from that sense of communion, which is what heaven is all about. The more self-centered you become, the more you move away from God, and eventually the natural consequence of that is Hell, eternal isolation and separation from Divine Love.

The Rich Man is in purgatory. He expressed concerned for his brothers. Compassion is a grace from God and those in hell are forever deprived of God’s graces.

If you wanna know what hell is like, check this out.

Thank you for the book title, but I’m afraid of the devil. I don’t
like to read anything about him. I know he wants to kill me, and
you too! I don’t want to become de-sensitized to evil, this is the
devil’s first foothold.
Know your enemy!

Oh, the devil doesn’t want to kill you. He wants your soul. He’ll be your friend. He’ll come as an angel of light. He’ll give you your hearts desires for a price.

You should also consider that the hell of Lazarus may not be the hell of eternal damnation (Gehenna).

Jewish belief held that the abode of the dead (hell, prison; where forth Jesus went to preach the gospel while His body lay in the tomb) was separated into two parts by a great chasm. You had the bosom of Abraham (referred to Paradise by Jesus to the thief on the cross), which was as well as you could do without being assumed into heaven, and you had the other-half for the less fortunate (suffering!). Where each would await judgment from the Messiah.

I may be off a bit, it’s been a long time since I’ve studied it, but I don’t think I am. We forget that the word “hell” has only taken on the “Gehenna only” reference in recent times.
Are you saying there are 2 heavens and 2 hells? The first a
kind of holding tank till the return of Jesus? The first temporary,
and only a glimpse of the eternal heaven and hell? I, too would
like to study what you have studied. Where did you learn this
information?

Are you saying then that the rich man is on his way to heaven?

Thank you, but I am afraid to click on your link. I know that God
does not want me to dwell on the things of evil, but on the things
that are good, pure, holy and true. I always feel good when I
know I’m doing what God wants, it overrides my curiosity about
things of evil. I just have this question about love… Does
anyone else think the rich man is in purgatory?

He does want to kill us. That’s just One of the ways he does it.
Now let’s not try and give him any more attention. He doesn’t
deserve our attention, Jesus does.

For a couple weeks now, I cant stop thinking about this
question. There won’t be sin in heaven, and yet there are
people who want to sin who also love others. If they’re not
sorry, how can they make it to heaven? But they love people,
and how can there be love in hell? Is there love in hell?
If there was love there, then how could it truly be hell? It would
be like God was there.
Eternal punishment is the everlasting separation of God from the sinner, because the sinner continues to reject him; it is the allowing of creatures to torment the sinner, because he has turned to creatures instead of God as his ultimate end. This punishment is everlasting, not because God can never be satiated with the sight of the sinner’s pain, but because the sinner abides by his final choice, preferring a created good to God, and can no longer change his mind. He is eternally punished because he is eternally in the state of sin.

Kinda but not exactly.

There was heaven and hell (Sheol, the abode of the dead). Sheol was divided into two parts. Only a few, Moses, Elijah,…, went to heaven. Those who died in God’s favor went to “The Bosom of Abraham”, the good half. I cannot recall the terminology for the other half.

And after the coming of the Messiah those people in the bosom of Abraham would go to the new Garden of Eden, and the others to Gehenna (name taken from a valley near Jerusalem where children were burned as a sacrifice, the hell we most often think of when we use the terminology today.

It’s not much different from Catholic thought, which makes since when you remember that we’re just Israel v2.0.

I don’t recall where I learned this, a lot of it I got from my Sunday school teacher who lived in the biblical lands nearly her entire life. I also read almost everything I can get hold of, particularly when I was searching for the Truth.

If he is in purgatory, and that is what the evidence suggests, then he will eventually find his way to heaven.

Read the link – it will want you flee as far from evil as possible. First time I read it, I went to confession the very next day and began a more prayerful life.

Thank you:o … so now that the messiah has come, there is no
more Sheol?

O.K. – Someone today told me that official church teaching is
that the rich man in this parable is indeed in purgatory. So…
maybe the answer is no love in hell, yes love in purgatory?
But I still have a problem in thinking that people who love their
sins and are not sorry could make it to purgatory, even if they
love someone.

I read the link, it wasn’t bad. I look on it as her own personal
thoughts of what her friend would say if she could talk to her.
Some things were hard to follow. I have to wonder, she described
herself as happy in her marriage. So does she now hate her
husband??

Hasn’t anyone ever met even one person who was an unrepentant
sinner, yet loved people? Are they all going to purgatory even
though they’re not sorry?

Ask him/her to provide documentation for that because I have never heard that that was official Church teaching and I’m fairly sure it isn’t. It’s certainly not an infallible Church teaching.

Those in Hell are deprived of the virtue of charity which is love for God for his own sake and love for others for God’s sake. But there are natural kinds of “love” that do not rise to the level of supernatural charity. Having affection for family members for example does not entail the virtue of charity. Here’s what the Catholic Encyclopedia says:

The damned are confirmed in evil; every act of their will is evil and inspired by hatred of God. This is the common teaching of theology; St. Thomas sets it forth in many passages. Nevertheless, some have held the opinion that, although the damned cannot perform any supernatural action, they are still able to perform, now and then, some naturally good deed; thus far the Church has not condemned this opinion. The author of this article maintains that the common teaching is the true one; for in hell the separation from the sanctifying power of Divine love is complete.
