Is there one resurrection or two resurrections?

I seem to remember reading in Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma that it is heresy to believe there will be literally two resurrections, one of the just, one of the wicked.

But I’m not quite sure. Is that the case? Should I interpret Revelation 20 spiritually as the resurrection of faith, and the resurrection of the body?

Thanks!

Jesus is going to return again.
He rose from the dead a long time ago.
ALL HAIL THE LORD!

Jesus was the first resurrection (first fruits prefiguring our resurrection at the time of judgment). Also, we participate, in a sense in that first resurrection in our baptism when we “die with Christ” and are “reborn”. There were also some who were “resurrected” when Christ arose.

But there will be one resurrection of the bodies in the end times - those saved to eternal life, and those not saved to eternal separation from God (Hell).

There are some protestant denominations who believe in a first resurrection for a literal 1,000 millennial kingdom on earth, followed by a second resurrection of those who are not saved - that is not a teaching of the Church which teaches that the “kingdom” is on earth now empowered by the Holy Spirit and Christ reigning on the throne now, with the angels and Saints in Heaven. When Christ returns, it will be to judge (not rule on earth for 1,000 years). Thus the creed - “He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead”.

Blessings,

Brian

The Bible says that the dead in Christ shall rise first, which means another one is after that.

1 Thessalonians 4:16,17 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

These are the saints from Revelation 20:6.

When the wicked is resurrected, they will be the ones in Revelation 20:7,8. (The number of whom is the sand of the sea)

Yes, there will be two resurrections (one of the dead in Christ and one of the wicked). The bible plainly says that.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see a second Resurrection here. The dead rise first, as indicated. But then those that are still living shall be caught up together with them. This isn’t a Resurrection for they never died.

And regarding the quote from Revelation, I’m not sure if anybody can use Revelation by itself and say, “The Bible clearly says so”. I would look to Jesus describing the parable of the Sheep and the Goats to see that there is one Resurrection.

"and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked…(end)
Acts 24:15

"Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life,(end)
Romans 6:4

I believe the latter from Romans is a “Spiritual resurrection”…and the former is the resurrection that which is promised by Christ, were we will raise with incorruptible bodies, such as He…as we are now Divine partakers, being “born-again”.

Maybe you misunderstood me. I no longer wish to know how Protestants interpret the Bible, I want to know how the Church interprets the Bible.

With that being said, I was wondering if the 1st and 2nd resurrection are spiritual. Protestants have fallen into the error of literalism, so I’m not really concerned with a literal reading at all.
