If i have to confess lustful thoughts, looking at pornography, and stuff like looking at girls lustfully and everything, can i just say looking at impure images and thats the end of it? It seems that they are all pretty much linked.

I just realized maybe this should have gone into moral theology. Sorry.

If it were me, I’d go ahead and confess both looking at pornography and lustful thoughts because, technically, they are different. But, more importantly, if this is a recurring problem for you, you should get a good confessor to help you because if you don’t get at the root of it, it could affect your future marriage relationship. Satan uses our weak areas to get to us and he never tires of attacking us. I’ve seen many good families destroyed by sexual sin, particularly pornography. It’s not as innocent as the world would have you believe. Through the graces of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Eucharist, you can overcome these types of sin areas so that it doesn’t develop into a likelong struggle. Just MHO.

It’s not a recurring thing it’s just happened a few times. And if i look at a girl lustfully, would that go under looking at impure images, or lustful thoughts? And another question: if i encourage someone else to sin (example: like telling someone to lie to the school teacher so i don’t get caught cheating or something), is that a mortal sin? And what would i say in confession? Encouraging others to sin?

If i look at images that aren’t impure but cause me to have lustful thoughts, is that wrapped up in “looking at impure images” thanks. I made an appointment for a confession and it will probably be my last for a while so i want to get everything right.

Honey, just tell the priest what you did. It doesn’t need a special formula. It just needs to be clear and contrite. I looked at a girl lustfully. I encouraged a friend to lie to keep myself out of trouble. What matters more is that you are sorry and want to turn away from your sins.

Having lustful thoughts can be caused by many things, some of which, like seeing a beautiful (but appropriately dressed) girl, so I’d just say that you’re having impure thoughts and leave it at that. Viewing pornography is different because the intent is to cause impure thoughts. Regarding telling someone to lie so you don’t get caught cheating, I’m not sure it’s a mortal sin, but I’d simply tell the priest what you did. Mortal sin has to meet the three conditions - grave matter, full knowledge, full consent of the will. The priest would have to hear the details to determine if all three were met, but I wouldn’t obsess over it. Just try to get to confession if there is any doubt so you can receive the Eucharist with a clear conscience. The grace of the Eucharist is immeasureable.

Having impure thoughts is either minor sin or not a sin at all (if they are random and we do not dwell on them). Viewing pornography is not usually a mortal sin, but it can very easily lead to mortal sins.

The big problem with viewing pornography is that we are purposely putting ourselves in a near occaion for serious sin, and that can be a very dangerous tempation that we should be able to avoid or want to avoid.

In allowing ourselves to be put in such a position we are exhibitting a very casual, lax, and dangerous attitude towards sin. It would be like purposely walking down the street where we know hookers and drug pushers hang out. We may not initially intend to commit serious sin, but we are placing ourselves in harms way with full awareness that it could be dangerous. That’s not a wise thing to do.

I had a Priest tell me once that it was okay to “look at women” he referred to their bodies as “soul wrappers” He is a really cool Priest.
