Is there other prayers or ways to pray for 15 to 30 minutes. That is not the rosary

Don’t confuse Centering Prayer with New Age Centering, which may be what Fr Dreher got confused with.
Yeah, I’ve heard that the Trappists really took things too far, and that may be where Fr. Dreher’s experience with Centering Prayer comes from.

That’s interesting I was led to believe centering prayer was a no-no

Because there ARE some forms of centering prayer that are new age and spiritually dangerous, all centering prayer tends to get lumped together in a throw-the-baby-out-with the-bath-water fashion. Authentic Catholic centering prayer is a part of the traditions of the church stretching back to the desert fathers.

Not even close.

Fr Dreher’s article is the opposite of what the Trappist at St Joseph’s Abbey teach about Centering Prayer.

I have made several retreats there and spoke with the monks about Centering Prayer and also Fr Dreher’s article, to which they just roll their eyes and say nothing.

Centering Prayer, or Contemplative Prayer as it’s often referred to today, is nothing more than turning toward Christ who dwells within.

The use of a Sacred Prayer word, which is repeated when we become aware that we’ve been distracted away from prayer, is merely to be used like Hail Mary’s, The Jesus Prayer or other prayers just as saying the name of Jesus. It’s like a compass. It points us toward the focus of our intention,l which is being in the presence of God, who dwells within. St Teresa of Avila referred to this as “Mental Prayer.”

Centering Prayer, is Christ Centered.

Eastern Meditation is of course not centered on Christ, nor interior prayer itself, but seeks to transcend, outside of the self, hence the term, “Transcendental Meditation.” is often the term used.

The two methods have a different purpose entirely and should not be confused as being the same, even though the mechanics look alike.
