There was an expose of a Catholic church in Latin America that had a depiction of Mary on a cross. This is the stumbling block for me. Can you explain it?
This particular “expose” seriously erred in stating that the statue in question was a statue of a crucified Mary. The statue was of a local saint known as Santa Liberata (“She who received liberation”). When she refused to obey her father’s command to marry a corrupt non-Christian prince, her father ordered her to be crucified. Throughout Christian history, non-Christians have many times executed Christians by means of crucifixion, thinking it appropriate to dispose of the Christians in the manner in which their Founder was executed. Another example of such martyrdoms occurred in Japan with the executions by crucifixion of St. Paul Miki and his companions.
