I have been around Alcoholics Anonymous for 20 years and the Catholic “bashing” is getting worse and worse in meetings and I feel very uncomfortable. What can you suggest?
Share your concerns with whoever is facilitating the meetings. Surely it should be standard operating procedure in such groups that “sharing feelings” should not include bashing other people’s religions. You might say to the group leader:
I understand that members need to share their experiences, and some of those experiences may involve negative encounters with religious figures. But I would appreciate it if you would step in and remind everyone that sharing a negative experience with a religious leader should not digress into criticizing the religion the leader represents.
