I read on the USCCB site today that there is to be a new NAB version released in 2009 in which the old testament will be revised. Does any one happen to know when this is to be released, what will be revised, and whether or not any other books will be fixed? What will these revisions entail? Hopefully the revision will include an overhaul of the terrible notes and book intros!!

I am sure it will be revised. Since I have been teaching RCIA there has been at least 3 revisions. I am not a really great supporter of the NAB as I think there are better translations. I use it because the Readings at Mass come from this translation.

In the first revision the New Testament was neutered. In the second revision the Psalms were neutered. This trend does not bode well for future revisions.

I wonder if eventually they’ll issue a NAB with the Old Testament Revised–the Revised Grail Psalms–and the New Testament revised just enough to barely meet inclusive language requirements for the passages that are used in mass.

If they did all of that the NAB still wouldn’t be great–it would be less bad though.

That might be about as much as one could ever hope for concerning the NAB.

American translators who favor the NAB might indeed try that because they may be afraid that a New Jerusalem bible with Refvised Grail Psalms and minimally acceptable inclusive language changes to the New Testament would become the preferred text for English speaking people in England and Australia and the NAB would become marginalized.

Can you please provide a link to that article?

Thanks,

Doesn’t surprise me. They want to bring the rest of the Old Testament down to the pathetical level of translation as they have done for the New Testament and Psalms. The entire translation should just be tossed.

The prior link doesn’t connect, here is the right one: usccb.org/nab/faq.shtml
Thanks for the link.

It would be nice to at least have a NAB edition available that matches the changes made for the Liturgy of the Word. However, I’m not sure that the update described is going to accomplish this.

// it also would be nice if they stop tampering with the text (inclusive language) and terrible wording…
