Is this a Catholic stance on gay marriage?

I’m posting a recap on my argument on why gay marriage is wrong. If anyone can give any suggestions to give my recap a punch or articles that sway in my favor, please do so. Gay marriage was brought up in one other forum and almost everyone seems to be for it. I entered the discussion, and tried to my best to stand up for the church. Now, that the debate’s dying down, I want to deliver one more punch and maybe you guys can help me out here.

As a Catholic, I believe that gay marriage is wrong because it is not open to life, unhealthy to its participants and is an attempt to break the definition of traditional marriage. Marriage is a union between a man and a woman. It allows the couple to grow in unity and give birth to new life. Sex is both procreative and unitive, sex must be open to life. Homosexual sex on the other hand isn’t, for under no circumstance is it possible for two people of the same sex to bear a child.

I think every child should have the right to be brought up by both a father and a mother and I think it is wrong for homosexual people to adopt children. I personally can’t imagine myself as I am today had I been raised by two men or women. And I don’t think anyone would want their children to grow up in a homosexual environment either. A homosexual lifestyle has been statistically proven as unhealthy. Homosexual lifestyles place its participants at a higher risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Moreover, homosexual relationships have also been known to be short-lived and are overall, a bad environment to raise children. Traditional Marriage improves the health of its participants while homosexual relationships do the opposite.

I agree that homosexuals should be treated with respect and compassion but to legalize marriage between the same sexes is wrong.

Sex is both sacred and holy and I believe traditional marriage should be defended. For the sake of young children, the health of others, and for the Church and her duty to defend the holy sacrament of matrimony, I am against gay marriage.

For me, “I am against gay marriage” is wrong. Who cares about what you think in 1 million years time?
The question is what God thinks…That is the Catholic stance…

You can slap a piece of paper on a desk and declare a table and chair to be married and it will do naught. Marriage is much more than a piece of paper, it’s an indelible mark on the human soul put there by none other than God himself. No matter what we try to legislate in our human establishments it will not change what marriage is.

The greater fear is not that someone make a piece of paper declaring someone ‘legally’ bound with another, but that by making it a national law it will then be required of all people who preform marriages to perform those ceremonies. There is a great deal of difference in two people walking into a judges office and being declared married, and the performance of a Catholic ceremony in which they give their lives not just to each other, but to God.

So the stance is not ‘I am against gay marriage’, but that gay marriage does not exist.

For an informed analysis of the biblical context that supports a loving and committed gay marriage see: inclusiveorthodoxy.org/ - the article by Justin Cannon is quite helpful and illuminating.

I would just add…

What is the intent of secular marriage laws and does homosexual marriage meet that intent? The answer is no, but somehow the intent of the law has been lost in a politically correct world.

Thanks for the replies, I posted it. And just to clarify, when I said that the “debate was dying down”, I didn’t mean to say that I wrote so well that everyone just shutted-up. It’s the opposite actually, I’ve received a lot of responses against my position. Things quited down though, so I think its a good idea to express my beliefs through a summary, something I feel I didn’t do so well in the topic. After that, I’m out. I’m outnumbered, tired and have school work to focus on. The thread can just do whatever, I just want to express what we believe in and why we believe it.

This is not consistent with Church teaching. I invite you to read the following:

vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20030731_homosexual-unions_en.html

It should be pointed out that I, for one, view the word commitment as referring to one partner for life. There is evidence that shows otherwise for many homosexual persons who consider themselves married:

😦

This is really really bad theology at best

The gay relationships that last are because they lack the concept of sexual fidelity (sleeping with others is fine in those relationships) thus they aren’t actually committed.

Gay “marriage” is wrong because gay sex is wrong. 'nuff said.

Spend your time explaining why gay sex is wrong and the gay “marriage” question will answer itself.

In a debate like this (I support your position btw), stay away from statistics. Because every statistic you have against gay marriage, there is a statistic for it. You need to win people over based on the moral truths of the faith, not what some pyschologist said.
