Is this a correct understanding of Purgatory?

my 11 year old son asked me if people (souls) get to see God before going to purgatory. I told him yes, for a “moment”. I also said that the pain in purgatory is the intense ache of wanting to be with him, but not being able to. Is this accurate? if not, what is the correct answer.
