Is this a mortal sin, or not a sin?

Hello everyone, I have a question about intention on sinning and whether I need to go to confession tomorrow. (I don’t want to because I’ve worked really hard to a have a week free on impure sins) my issue is that tonight I was driving and a car came up to me, I didn’t know if he wanted to race so I sped up and so did he and then slowed back down, I then began honking signaling to him that I wanted to do a race (this is on a public street) and he didn’t really seem interested, but if he was I was going to race him, however I saw police up ahead and slowed down and began to get nervous as I always do, did I committ a sin by intending to street race? (The speed limit is 35 and I wasnt planning on passing 50, plus there was only one other car on the road, if that diminishes or adds to culpability) can someone please help me determine if I committed a mortal sin?

Please get help from a priest. We can’t assist you via the internet with issues such as these.

I can’t say for sure, but if you have the ability to go to confession tomorrow, do it! Talk to the priest about your situation and he will be able to better assist you. If you’re feeling guilt and shame about your wrongdoings, there is no better place to go than the confessional. If it makes you feel better, I’m going to confession tomorrow too! Haha :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Yea well I really don’t want to go because I’ve been going for the past 5 months every week and this is one very rare occasion that I haven’t committed a sin of impurity, I’m just asking if this is a mortal sin since the situation wasn’t really that dangerous given the fact that there were no cars

Just wondering if someone could help determine my culpability via the information I gave, thanks

Unfortunately this is not something that we are going to be able to help you with. We don’t know the full situation, and what kind of thoughts were going on in your mind. I would really advise you to talk to a priest if you’re feeling anxious about this. If you feel that it is possibly a mortal sin, then just go to confession! There’s no shame in going frequently.

Okay I just feel weird going back and forth to confession, and my priest probably knows I’m going to go out and committ the same old sins again, I just want to be able to take a break from confession to show him I’m making progress

I hear ya. (And I know you’d be going for the racing thing and not impurity) It’s hard to return to confession for the same sins over and over. I’ve been there. But the important thing is that you return to the confessional. You recognize where you have fallen, and acknowledge your need to return to a state of redeeming grace by the means of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Don’t allow shame to keep you from reconciling yourself with God. That is a tool that the devil uses against us. Never stop going to confession, even if you are really struggling and need to go every week, or more than once a week! Do penance, pray, fast, and do acts of charity. God will supply you with the grace needed to break free of sin.

Okay thanks for clearing that up and making a good point!

Also, as I try to make an act of Percect Contrition, how can I Know for sure if I have succesfully made an Act of Perfect Contrition? Also, any tips to make an Act of perfect contrition?
