Is this a mortal sin?

If I know something is sinful but I do not know it is considered grave matter, is it still a mortal sin?

Speak to a priest and ask during your next confession.
“When in doubt,
let it out.” … In the confessional of course. 😉
 
I agree that you should discuss the details with your confessor. That said, for an action to be a mortal sin, you must know it is grave matter before you freely choose to do it.

No. There are three conditions needed for a sin to be mortal:
  1. Its subject must be a grave (or serious) matter.
2. It must be committed with full knowledge, both of the sin and of the gravity of the offense.
  1. It must be committed with deliberate and complete consent, enough for it to have been a personal decision to commit the sin.
The one in bold applies to you. Since you did not know the sin was mortal, it does not constitute full knowledge. However, since you did know it was a sin, it is a venial sin at best, but does not have to be confessed to a priest unless you desire to confess it.
 
I agree with others that the occurance of that sin in the past cannot be a mortal sin.

HOWEVER, you are responsible for finding out whether something is grave matter or not, if you are in doubt. To try to avoid knowing what is grave matter on purpose, so you can commit something that is grave matter without it being a mortal sin, is in itself a sin. So if there is any danger of you doing whatever it is again, you must go to a priest beforehand and find out if it is grave matter.

The point is that you must submit yourself to God’s will. It is not a game, where you can “work the system.” 😃
