Is this a mortal sin?

Today in class, the teacher gave an extra credit assignment to the class with about 5 maybe a little more minutes left In class. I think we were allowed to work in groups because everyone was talking with eachother and trying to figure out how to do the extra credit. I didn’t know how to do it, but a person next to me did and gave me what they got as the answer. I had a class right after the one I was in so I turned it in and left. The extra credit was three points on a test. Is this a mortal sin? Even if we were allowed to work in groups? I didn’t do the work, and I wish I had. I am kinda prone to worrying about is this a sin or not etc. but I wanted to know if this was a mortal sin and if I should recieve the Eucharist Sunday at Mass. Thanks for your answers

I would counsel you to take this to Confession as only you and the Confessor can determine if this was a mortal or venial sin. There are many mitigating factors that you have not listed that need to be taken into consideration as well.

If you feel like it’s bothering you go to Confession.

Off hand, I would not think it’s mortal sin, but that is my opinion.

I’d say that the experience of working in a group was part of the lesson being taught, rather than every person individually coming up with the right answer. Given it was group work, it would be impossible for everyone to turn in unique answers since to do so they’d have to work individually. So no, just because you didn’t come up with the answer on your own, you submitted the answer that was the sum of the efforts of all the people in the group. Your part of that effort was to understand the answer and agree with it.

I don’t think there’s any possible sin there. It was an exercise created by the teacher and you played by the rules, which allow for one person to suggest to a group the answer which is then submitted by all of them. If it turns out this wasn’t what the teacher meant, then the teacher is at fault for permitting the class to work together, not you for not being psychic enough to read the teacher’s mind.

You’re fine. On the assumption that you were in a ‘state of grace’ (i.e. not in mortal sin) beforehand, there’s no reason to believe that you’re suddenly wicked now. Go to communion in peace and confidence.

This is not grave matter at all. Ergo no mortal sin. IMHO this isn’t even a venial sin.

I would have to agree with Anathama Sit, if your conscience is bothering you, it is usually our moral conscience kicking in. Go to confession or ask your priest in person. Your confusion is showing that you are maturing and your faith is becoming your own -not something your parents tell you to believe. Now is the time to keep asking question so you can understand yourself and what you believe. So hold onto your hat, some people get stuck in this phase of life and never get over the hump. Sounds like you are well beyond a lot of your peers since they should have been wondering the same thing! It doesn’t sound like anyone asked the teacher about this point.
