I have scrupulosity and I just can’t figure this one out.

I know that it is usually a mortal sin to deliberately drive recklessly or dangerously, but is it a mortal sin to fantasize about drinving recklessly? I was thinking earlier how fun it would be to drive really fast like a race car driver, but then I got to thinking that this might be a mortal sin to deliberately desire to do something that is gravely sinful. Thoughts???

I’m sure that most race car drivers are not in mortal sin due to their fascination in driving fast. However if you consent to wanting your careless driving to cause harm to yourself or others then your intent to harm is grave matter. I personally don’t think that is the case from your post. Find a race track and have at it. A friend at work races and loves it. As long as you are responsible and not going down residential streets I don’t think that any sin is committed. That’s my two cents.🙂

I don’t know if this makes a difference but I pictured myself driving on residential streets and I think maybe the freeway with traffic.

No, it doesn’t make a difference. If you were fantasizing about hurting people… that would be bad. But you weren’t.

…right? 😉

My Brother in Christ…NO…fantasizing about driving fast like a race car driver is in no way a mortal sin…you are simply desiring to do something that all guys, and some girls, dream about at some point in their lives…now, on the other hand, if you fantasized about driving fast and cutting people off and ramming people and causing mass panic and mayhem…that would be a grave matter which if all 3 conditions were met, would constitute a mortal sin.

Its also important to note that we cannot really determine if something is a mortal sin for you. That spiritual diagnosis should come from your confessor.

Well, it is similar to a thread I posted about playing Grand Theft Auto a few months ago…

Well, just do not that, but I do not see anything wrong with having a fantasy of driving around Liberty City and running people down (especially when you can cheat and do it with a tank). Those games are for entertainment as they do not encourage one to actually do that.

I do not know what you mean by “recklessly”, but driving around in a racecar in the appropriate area, such as a racetrack, is not considered reckless if you can control the vehicle. This is different from the Grand Theft Auto scenario.
