:confused:Hi,
Is the book A Concise History of the Catholic Church by Thomas Bokenkotter a safe read for Catholics who want some faithful history of the Catholic church? Or is there a better concise history available out there? Any recommendations?
thanks
Jeanne

Bokenkotter was the text of my Church History course a generation ago. I don’t recall it being dangerous or unorthodox - but I do recall it being deadly boring, almost to the point of being impossible to read!

I see that Alan Schreck has a Church history book out - I haven’t read it, but knowing Schreck’s writing (and his reputation for orthodoxy) I’d recommend it sight unseen. In fact, I think I’ll buy it for myself! 😃

Compact History of the Catholic Church ISBN-13: 978-0892833283

Hi NHinsider,
Thanks for the response. My copy is now on its way. I read the reviews on Amazon and it does sound good.

I read this about a month ago. On the whole I think it is good, but it has its ups and downs. I thought it was excellent covering the Reformation and the various traditions that sprung from it. However, from V2 to the present you have to sort out what is history and what is opinion. But, if you are actually living through a time period it would be hard to not have your opinions affect how you report history.

Another book I strongly recommend, how the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization by Dr. Woods.

The Bokenkotter book is not bad overall, but it does have some serious issues. From page 432 of the Revised edition:

“Of course there is another possibility – that the authorities themselves will take the initiative and end the shortage by doing away with the requirement of celibacy and ordaining women.”

Um, no, that is not a possibility (well, eliminating the celibacy requirement is a possibility, but ordaining women is not). There are several other quotes in the book that speak of the deep “anti-female prejudice in the Church” (p. 466). At least Bokenkotter doesn’t hide his biases. 🤷

I would recommend Church History by Fr. John Laux as a better alternative, though Laux’s book only goes up through about 1944.

If you’re looking for short, sweet, and to-the-point, then you can’t do better than Dr. Schreck’s The Compact History of the Catholic Church (as someone already suggested).

If you’re looking for a very readable, somewhat humorous account of Church History, H. W. Crocker’s Triumph: The Power and Glory of the Catholic Church is excellent.

If you’re looking for a super swanky, full color church history book with maps and pictures galore, you can’t do better than The History of the Church textbook that is part of the original Didache Series. This title may be going out of print soon as the publisher (Midwest Theological Forum) is now producing a Didache Semester Series, which will include a Semester edition of this church history textbook due out in early 2010.

There’s plenty of other good stuff, but these are always my top recommendations. 👍

Thanks to you all.
I now have a good list. I just might read several of the suggested books and something just might stick in my sieve of a mind.

God Bless
Jeanne
