Hi,

So I happened to get dragged in to an argument and was accused of lying.

I was fully convinced that what I said was true, so I replied to my friend that I swear over the Bible that I am not lying.

I found out afterwards that most of the things I said were true, but there was one detail that wasn’t correct, which I didn’t know about myself until someone explained it to me.

I am now very worried that I swore over the Bible and had one detail wrong that I was unaware of at the time. It is a minor detail and the whole drama picture and conclusion remains the same, but it buggs me that I had one fact wrong and swore over the Bible.

Please let me if I committed a grave sin unknowingly.

You didn’t intentionally try to deceive. Therefore you did not lie. You misspoke. Nothing to worry about. Just try not to make it a habit to “swear on the Bible” imprudently.

Thanks, this really put my mind at ease. 🙂

I can’t remember if I have sworn over the Bible in the past (not to my knowing). I did it this time as the accusations were very severe. 😰

A lie is when you know something is not true and you tell it anyway and with malice or for personal gain.

Thinking the information you have is true and sharing it, but learning that it wasn’t completely true isn’t a sin.

It becomes of sin if after learning the truth, you continue to tell the parts that are false.

Quit swearing over the bible. We’re not supposed to do such things.

Unless you are taking an Oath of Office, there is nothing important enough to “swear on the Bible”. If your friends do not believe you, that says more about your friendship than it does about the incident.

You might also want to note that full knowledge is part of the definition of mortal sin, so you can’t “accidentally” commit a mortal sin.

It wasn’t intentional. You genuinely believed what you said was true. Maybe you shouldn’t have sworn over the Bible over an argument. That maybe a sin, not sure if it would be venial or mortal. Just mention it in confession. If you are not sure it probably means you did not commit a mortal sin
