Dear Forum!

I am scrupulous, and yes i do have a confessor and a spiritual director (he is both, Fr. Johnson) He keeps me in line. However today, at Holy Mass, as i was altar serving, i had AN INCREDIBLY BLASPHEMOUS THOUGHT. Never in a million years would i enjoy a thought like this, ( I still have a really sinking feeling), and i read other threads, and on a similar thread, I read Jimmy Akins blog on this, and it said that ocd/scrupulsoity happens because the painful thoughts try to increase your stress level. BOY DID IT!! I am kneeling, and all of a sudden i look at the stained glass image of the SACRED HEART and it goes away, (my fav devotion), but i think, and i dont know for sure, one thought led to another which was th blasphemous one, (i think both were) and i broke out in a sweat. Literally, Im kneeling, and my Cassock gets heavy on my arms, as sweat just pulls it in, and my head/face started flowing down my face, and my face just flushed, VERY HOT. Let me tell y’all, the tempature shot right up. And my mind just starts racing, “do i recieve or do i not?” I recieved 😦 i dont know fully if i should have?? i did, and now, i dont feel too upstart now, should i go to confession tommorrow morning and then recieve? or can i just recieve? NEVER WOULD I ENJOY A THOUGHT LIKE THIS, however im scared it hung around too long

I nede your help, should i recieve tommorrow and is this blasphemy 😦

Please help! every answer helps!

The thought itself was a temptation. Unless you consented to it, there was no sin.

God loves you, and understands, more than you do, how much you suffer.

Trust in His love.

Well first of all - welcome to the millionth year event - as you wouldn’t, but you did, that makes this the millionth year event.

Second as you are scrupulous and have a confessor why are you coming to us - I am sure your confessor advised you to come to him - he has Holy Orders - we do not.

random thoughts are not sinful…BUT if you dwell on them they could be… and they are rarely mortal sins.

The best definition of a mortal sin is one in which you basically say to God, “I hate you and I never want to obey or honor you again”. (that is what my confessor told me on how to tell a mortal sin from a venial one). When you commit a mortal sin you are breaking off your relationship to God… you KNOW when you have committed a mortal sin. IF there is any doubt then it most probably is NOT a mortal sin.

So yes, you should receive communion, since all venial sins are forgiven during the mass.

IF you are certain you committed a mortal sin then do not go to communion but if you are not sure, then most likely you only committed a venial sin. IF you are in doubt say a sincere act of contrition and receive. God knows we are not perfect, so He accepts us anyway.

.
I would not put it that way (though that is certainly one way to commit a mortal sin)

The Compendium of Catechism issued by Pope Benedict XVI gives a nice summary:
  1. When does one commit a mortal sin?
1855-1861
1874

One commits a mortal sin when there are simultaneously present: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. This sin destroys charity in us, deprives us of sanctifying grace, and, if unrepented, leads us to the eternal death of hell. It can be forgiven in the ordinary way by means of the sacraments of Baptism and of Penance or Reconciliation.
  1. When does one commit a venial sin?
1862-1864
1875

One commits a venial sin, which is essentially different from a mortal sin, when the matter involved is less serious or, even if it is grave, when full knowledge or complete consent are absent. Venial sin does not break the covenant with God but it weakens charity and manifests a disordered affection for created goods. It impedes the progress of a soul in the exercise of the virtues and in the practice of moral good. It merits temporal punishment which purifies.

We all have the occasional perverse thought. The question is largely, “Did we act on that thought?”

In Roman Catholic moral theology, a mortal sin, as distinct from a venial sin, must meet all of the following three conditions:
  1. Its subject must be a grave (or serious) matter.
  2. It must be committed with full knowledge, both of the sin and of the gravity of the offense (no one is considered ignorant of the principles of the moral law, which are inborn as part of human knowledge, but these principles can be misunderstood in a particular context).
  3. It must be committed with deliberate and complete consent, enough for it to have been a personal decision to commit the sin.
If you are in doubt, you certainly should go to Confession, and ask your confessor. But IMHO, you did not commit a mortal sin, because, at the minimum, you did not give your full consent.

No consent, no sin, no matter how horrified you were by the thought.

You need to talk to your spiritual director, not us.

You REALLY need to listen to what he has already told you about intrusive thoughts and your OCD.

Stop right there. Anything related to your anxiety disorder should be addressed directly with your confessor and spiritual director, who knows you and the particulars of your situation.
