I thought asking for advice was sinful.

Despite thinking this, I still asked for advice.

Let’s say I committed a sin here because I thought asking for advice was a sin and I still did it anyway.
  1. Would it be sinful then to use the advice because it was obtained through sin?
  2. Once I confess this sin, do I need to make “reparation” for it by pretending I never received the advice at all?

Your advice to carguy kind of applies to your question here despite that subject being about scandal. Did you intend to ask for advice on how to get away with tax evasion or bank robbery? Then the answers to 1 and 2 would be a resounding yes. Calorie value of turkey vs. beef? No. Since only you and God know the nature of the advice you sought, your motivations for doing so, and level of knowledge of culpability, a careful examination of conscience would help you decide where on that continuum to place it. Even if you get it wrong before you walk in, the Holy Spirit guides priests in confession to get it right.

I’ll admit that I don’t know if it’s a sin to do something that you think is a sin when it’s not, but I suspect it is. Take this with a grain of salt because it’s secular knowledge I remember from gen-ed philosophy at a junior college 22 years ago: moral laziness is defined as not thinking about the morality of your actions. I think I got a B in that class, but I haven’t seen a transcript since I got hired at my current job, lol. IDK if that helps or not, but I hope it does. God bless!

The advice asked for is objectively good. I’m just wondering whether it is a sin to use benefits gained through sin (the sin here was I thought asking for advice was a sin and still did so anyway)

Talk to your priest. You know that’s what you should be doing.

Well no.

Asking for advice is not a sin.

Your thinking it is a sin, does not make it one.

How’s it going Zyn? As a scrupulous person myself I can understand, or at least empathize with your struggle. As my understanding is, asking for advice is not sinful. Where the scrupulous person I believe struggles is not asking for advice, but seeking reassurance, and this can be problematic. Even though problematic I don’t believe it is sinful. So please be at peace as you struggle to sort through these issues. As always listen to the advice of a well intentioned confessor. And I do mean a well intentioned one. Unfortunately there are some who are very short and impatient, finding one who can help you work through these situations is very beneficial. Learning to trust is very important. So if you have a good confessor, or someone of goodwill, recommends to not seek reassurance on the internet I would recommend following that asvice, it is probably for your/our good.

Guys, he/she doesn’t think that asking for advice is a sin. He was using that as an example. I think, anyway.

A h I see, my apologies if I misread your intention/post OP. Thanks for the clarification Mancini. Then in that case I would probably go with Reuben or Boom, I wouldn’t think it was a sin, as long as your intent wasn’t to offend God, but I could see the gray area there, that’s a good confessor question. Bada book Bad-a boom.
