Does the Church consider “making out” a sin?

I don’t want to elaborate, but if anyone needs more info, let me know.

Thank you in advance 🙂

You’ll need to elaborate. Some good Catholics on this board will hold the belief that anything more than 1 smooch is too much. Others will quote Christopher West (and this is my viewpoint) that anything that would tempt one to masturbate after any type of kissing is problematic. Some condemn French kissing or passionate kissing.

For me, I think that these things should be deemed OK, as long as they don’t lead to impure thoughts (see above with CW) or lead to the objectification of the partner…

Though I understand this is problematic for many people.

What exactly do you want me to elaborate on? How passionate it would be?

I would be glad to elaborate! I just need specifics.

🙂

Well,

Just say what, for you, constitutes ‘making out.’ For instance, do you include a French kiss as making out, because some people here will. Do you think more than ONE kiss is making out. Or do you think making out implies some level of feeling and touching and passionate kissing?

Just give me a definition of what you think making out is…

But I already gave my opinion haha

Ok, here’s my definition of “making out”:

Numorus (sometimes passionate) kisses on the lips. So yes, more than one. And it lasts for a few minutes as well. Not like in the movies where they have one kiss that is supposed to mean a lot. Do you get my drift here?

If you need more elaboration, let me know.

Imagine Jesus watching you kiss this person. Imagine Jesus staring right at you while you kiss. How would you kiss this person then? How much would be too much then? Jesus is everywhere. He’s watching how you respect this person’s worth as a child of His now, who is a future spouse of someone, quite possibly one other than you. Start respecting your future spouse now, and you won’t go too far while Jesus is there lovingly watching you take good care of this His precious child now.

One priest gave me a really good guideline: if you wouldn’t do what you’re doing on the couch in front of your parents, it’s probably not something you should be doing (as an unmarried adult). Hope that helps!

I believe the advice like the two posts before mine is pretty much the best you can get. It’s not about locating some precise physical border you can’t cross but within it everything is fine. The point is we can’t objectify our partners, our partners cannot be tools in satisfying our desires and we don’t have a claim on the partner’s body before marriage. It is also wrong if it causes near occasion of sin, which means you run a tangible risk of succumbing to lustful thoughts or other temptations.

I generally tend to see making out as an activity falling under, “something to do together,” and while I have no problem with it being there in marriage, I don’t think it’s all that proper before marriage, although I would hesitate before calling it wrong just for this one reason. However, one must be careful so that it doesn’t become a replacement for sex.

if you have to elaborate, the answer is probably yes

That kind of kissing gets the juices flowing if you know what I mean, in other words, gets your bodies ready for sex. If you don’t intend to follow through it’s like teasing yourselves and putting you too close to temptation as well as near occasion of sin. Trust me, I know. Before DH and I got married this is how things got started and things went too far. We never had intercourse until we got married, but we still crossed the line. Nine months before the wedding we really got serious about staying chaste and decided to stop “making out” or french kissing until our wedding night. It really enriched our relationship as we had time to focus on our friendship.
