I am a teenager, and thus, by nature, struggle with masturbating. Whenever I feel the urge, I try to get myself away from it by imagining how great sex will be when I get married. I don’t think about too long for me to consider it “fantasizing”, but for about 5 seconds. This is enough time usually to decrease the temptation to masturbate. Is this still a sin?

If you are not imagining the sexual act itself, but merely positing the fact that you will have very deep and meaningful marital unions with your future wife, I would say, no, this is not a sin.

Interesting question. And doing that decreases your wish to masturbate? Then I’d agree with the previous poster’s response. It sounds like some young lady will be blessed to marry you.

I went through a horrible time with pornography and masturbation when I was younger also. I really do see where you are coming from. Going through all the garbage that goes with puberty is very spiritually challenging. As I advanced I found that every time I would have these though I would just immediately pray ( I know that probably sounds what everyone has been telling you 😉 but it is the best remedy) As for imagining how good sex will be when your are married that is an iffy one. Imagining how the blessed union between two souls is much more sacred than a one night stand while both are treating each other like a mere sex object. What you don’t want to do is start entertaining impure thoughts about having sex when you are married as that wouldn’t be helping the situation. I think you are not talking about that though. God bless 👍

Here a very common prayer for temptation.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Fantasizing about sex helps you to NOT masturbate…that just seems so backwards to me, but if it works, it works.

I have to say this; if you had a horrible time you were doing it wrong… 😉

For the OP, as someone else said if it helps (and frankly I’m surprised it does but I am in no position to question you) go to.

If it really does help you, perhaps what you’re doing is not so much fantasizing as owning your feelings, so to speak.
When you admit to yourself that you’re feeling this temptation, then you can face it constructively and integrate it.
If you understand what I’m trying to say.

Your brother in Christ,

Looking at porn is a disgrace to every person that lived on Earth. It makes women/men into mere sex objects. The poor women who get caught up in this. I personally do not find committing a mortal sin and grievously offending God fun. I know this may seem like 🤷 to you 🙂

To coolcatholicguy:

Actually, I wrote this Post to Reply to the previous thread below, that you started on Easter Sunday. Since that thread has been Closed, I am posting my Reply now.
Is it ok to gradually stop doing something?

Well first of all, congratulations on your victory in making it through six and a half weeks of Lent without masturbating. It is an accomplishment that you should be justifiably proud of. I know that in my teenage years, I could not have gone a whole six weeks without masturbating. And I doubt if any of the guys answering your questions and giving you advice, could have ever gone six weeks without masturbating during their teenage years.

I think your plan A to try to stop masturbating, gradually, is a good one. It is not perfect, but it is a better plan than having NO plan at all, or if you took the attitude that you are simply not going to put any effort into trying to reduce or stop this very normal habit.

Just the fact that you have written into this website, is enough evidence for me that you are a good kid, and you want to live the life that God wants you to live.

According to all the statistics, virtually all males masturbate to one extent or another, especially during our teenage years and beyond. So you are definitely normal and not alone in what you are doing. Actually, unless you are SUPERhuman, I would be extremely shocked if you were able to stop this masturbating habit, permanently. I think the best you can hope for is to reduce the number of times you masturbate each week down to a moderate level which will be acceptable in God’s eyes. God always likes us to do things in moderation, and not excessively.

Everyone should eat three times a day. But when somebody eats continually, because of the sheer pleasure of eating, to the extent where they weigh more than twice their normal weight, barring a medical condition, then they could be extremely close to committing the sin of gluttony.

Now, I am not implying that all males should masturbate three times a day, to maintain proper physical and sexual health, but you should get the idea of the difference between doing something in moderation, or doing something excessively.

I may be going out on a limb here, but for most teen boys, ejaculating 6 times a week or less, is probably still in the moderate range of normal male sexual activity. Ejaculating more than 7 times a week, consistently week after week, should probably have to be considered an excessive level of masturbation at least for most Adult males. The possible exception to this, might be in the summertime, when the weather is warm, and teen boys usually have more free time on their hands, so they tend to use their hands a bit more often, engaging in other ‘pleasurable activities’, like baseball, soccer, and masturbation ! !

You are a very normal teen male. Just because you masturbate, don’t think that you are a bad or worthless teenager, or that you don’t love God and want to live the life that God wants you to live.

And more importantly, just because you masturbate, don’t think that God has stopped loving you. He will only ask of you, what you are physically and EMOTIONALLY capable of achieving and delivering. Therefore, your honest efforts are more important than the final results. So keep on talking to God, and honestly try to figure out what level of masturbation each week, He will be okay with, and what would possibly be excessive, considering your young age. The answer is between You and your Loving and Merciful God. I do not want to believe that our Loving and Merciful God will put teen boys into Hell for all eternity, just because they masturbate, habitually and uncontrollably.

Why didn’t the Catholic Church ever mention anything about the sinfulness or morality of masturbation before the Six century A.D.?

Why didn’t Jesus Christ ever teach us that masturbation could be a mortal sin?

Why does the Catholic Church believe that it knows more, and has more authority and power, then Jesus Christ, Himself?

At fourteen, certainly your body has developed to the point where you are PHYSICALLY mature enough to be able to ejaculate, and physically enjoy all the pleasures derived from masturbation.

But at fourteen, you are still not EMOTIONALLY mature enough yet, to have FULL control over your sexual urges. Therefore, because you are a teenager, and you do not have FULL control, and it is definitely a habit for you, I believe your masturbating should NOT be Gravely Offensive to God, and therefore NOT a mortal sin for you.

Habitual Sin

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=443636

I have confessed two sins over and over again in confession. Last time I went to confession with our pastor, who is a very Holy and rightous man, he told me that these sins that would normally be mortal are only venial because they are habitual. He told me that I do not need to confess them unless I felt the need to and that a true Act of Contrition would repeal these sins and allow me to recieve Communion. I just would like to see some church documents on this. I trust this priest completely and fully, and would normally never question his practices but I was a little unsettled about this one. Thank you and Pax Christi!

Let us know what you think about my Reply.
I would like to know if my Reply is helpful and beneficial to you in any way.

Coolcatholicguy, Good luck to you, young man.

First off. It isn’t right for Masturbation to be a sin, due to the fact that Animals, who have no way of knowing right from wrong and who act on base instinct also Masturbate.

Humans are the same. Aside from the fact, that if you Masturbate the correct way (only 2 times a week, at least 20 minutes both times) you are gonna be much healthier, and if you do it the right way, masturbation helps fight urges to have sex.

Although Humans have the ability of reason. We may choose to Masturbate or not, while animals don’t so they Masturbate whenever it appears in their instinct.

Masturbation is natural. Believe it or not, it makes you healthier.

My advice to the OP: Masturbate the right way, which is the restraining method of masturbating no more then twice a week, 20 minutes each. If you do that. You will have less sexual urges, and you will further your development in certain areas,

Not to mention, masturbation can relieve Anxiety and Depression.

It isn’t a sin, if you look at it logically. because it wouldn’t make sense for God to count it as bad when it is natural and can in turn, prevent more sins based on sexual desire.

I’m with you so far as masturbation isn’t wrong but just because something’s natural doesn’t make it ok. We have a natural drive to destroy and kill, Freud called this drive thanatos, but I don’t think we want to say destruction or killing are licit.

Masturbation—“Masturbation is the deliberate stimulation of the sexual organs in order to derive sexual pleasure” (CCC 2352). The Church teaches that sex has two main purposes that must be sought in the marriage act: sex is for reproduction of children within a valid marriage, and it is a loving, unifying act between husband and wife. Masturbation violates both aspects of the natural law and is thus a grave sin.

CCC 2352
By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

With God’s grace all things are possible. To say that masturbation is “healthy” or “good in moderation” can mislead many into serious sin.

Chastity is a virtue worthwhile fighting for with prayer, Sacraments, etc. If we say it is not possible to be chaste, then we are saying God is powerless to give us the grace to be chaste.

To be virtuous, not only with regards to chastity, but all the other virtues as well, requires daily prayer and vigilance. That is why the Lord died such a severe death for us, so that we may receive the grace He purchased for us. Do we want to follow Him or make excuses for ourselves?

As a Catholic Teenager (16 years to be exact), I deal almost daily with the temptations of the Flesh.
But to me, in the time of temptation thinking about sex when your married seems kind of awkward. But hey if it works for you and prevents you from abusing yourself than I dont see it as a sin. Human Sexuality is something that we should thank God for. We should thank him for giving us something so beautiful. But it musnt be abused in any way.

I HIGHLY suggest reading Mark 10:7-8. I am not going to post it. I want YOU to find out how sacred the courtship of marriage is.👍

You are very smart for your age! Very good answer. 🙂

Umm. Masturbation is not a violation of the natural law as other mammals who follow the natural law with no choice also masturbate.

SEX is solely for reproduction and is an act to show your spouse you love them. But Masturbation is different.

Just because the Church says its immoral and wrong doesn’t mean it is. Due to it being 100% natural.

Of course you have to have self control.

Masturbation FACTS:
  1. It is healthy in which it can help relieve Depression and lower Blood Pressure.
  2. If Masturbation is done right, with masturbation NO MORE then twice a week (can be done less) then Masturbation can fight sexual urges.
  3. Masturbation is 100% natural, and this is scientifically proven. Note: Mammals (Monkeys, Apes, and other mammals that have reproductive organs have been studied) have been seen Masturbating.
If Masturbation is Immoral then tell me Why Mammals (other then humans) that have no sense of right and wrong, and act on natural base instinct, also masturbate?

The church says a lot of things that make no sense.

Again: Masturbation doesn’t violate the purpose of sex, because IT IS NOT sex. It is self pleasure. Sex takes a lot of energy which results in lower life expectancy, and causes a chemical called Oxitosin (misspelled). Masturbation doesn’t produce the same chemicals as Sex, therefore is not considered it.

Sex is short for Sexual REPRODUCTION. Masturbation is different.

Black Angel,

I see you are not a Catholic, so you will see things differently.

And, we are not like the animals, in that we are made of matter AND spirit and can come to know our Creator.

Let us then look at this from the perspective of natural philosophy. It is clear that humans, far from being driven my mere animalistic instincts, are guided by a powerful differentiating force: reason. Animals indeed do what they do by instinct. But the call to rationality leads man to follow a different path; as such, we with the capacities for reason do have an obligation, in accordance with such capacity, to live lives of introspection. We are called, therefore, to examine our actions and decide using reason what is ethical and what is not.

Reason will tell you, I agree, that the primary purpose of sex is to express selfless love to another person. If so, I submit that the human capacity for sex is ordered primarily to this same end, and that as such it is improper to invert the purpose of sex by directing it towards onself. Indeed, human sexuality is supposed to be self-giving, and directing this gift towards oneself ultimately accomplishes nothing, and is therefore irrational and disordered.
Just because the Church says its immoral and wrong doesn’t mean it is. Due to it being 100% natural.
And may I ask what difference it makes that it is “100% natural”? I’m a 16-year-old guy myself, and I do understand how tough it is to resist these supposed “natural” urges, but I am not an animal. I am a human being with the ability, as per the whole reason thing, to come to understand what is in accordance with reason and what is not, what is right and what is wrong. When Pope Benedict claims that Christianity is the “religion according to reason,” the reasons he has for stating such are clearly not arbitrary.
The church says a lot of things that make no sense.
To those whom the light of Christ and the elucidation of reason have not yet illuminated.
Sex is short for Sexual REPRODUCTION. Masturbation is different.
It really isn’t. Masturbation is, clearly, a sexual act. To deny this is simply lunacy. And if it is indeed a sexual act, then it defies the ultimate purpose of sexuality, which is again the expression of love towards another human being.
