Is this a sin?

Sometimes, like today at a track meet, I tell myself that I will not even accidentally look at somethings, like a kids cool-looking shoes. When I accidentally look at them, I feel like I should do some kind of penance to make up for it. I feel bad if I don’t.

I also feel bad about asking this because it feels like I am getting out of my penance. Is this a sin?

Nothing wrong with wanting some cool-looking shoes. I could use a pair myself!

edit: Does it grieve you that he has those shoes and you don’t?

You need to talk to your priest about scrupulosity. This is a **serious **spiritual condition.

It is not sinful to look at someone’s shoes.

Honestly, based on this and your other posts, you need help. Professional spiritual help.

in reading the ten commandments I am not finding where looking at somebody’s shoes is a sin. is there some reason, or something you have heard or read that makes you think so? nobody here can assign you a penance, that is for your priest, during your confession.
 
Yes but I told myself I wouldn’t even accidentally look at them, and I did. That is why I am asking this.
 
You do have a rather guilty conscience all the time don’t ya? You need to relax, this is in no way good for your mental health at all.

Whoa, hon, relax! You didn’t sin at all. You’re only making yourself scrupulous. Don’t make promises that are difficult to fulfill…in fact, in your situation, I’d recommend not making promises of that nature at all. If you want to give yourself a penance, give up something you like to eat, or say some extra prayers.
