So, I bought two tickets for a sporting event and asked for two student-price tickets, despite the fact that I ama student and my brother is not.

In short, I lied and saved around £6 as a result.

Should I confess this?

No. You bought the tickets and are entitled to the discount as a student.

If my mom bought food using a senior citizen’s discount, does that mean I am not entitled to eat some or all of that food?

You didn’t cheat. You are entitled to the discount because of your status and you are the purchaser.

Worst case scenario, this is a venial sin (although I don’t believe it is).

Yes, but each ticket is individually priced, i bought a student-priced ticket for myself and then one for my brother instead of the normal-priced one. the discount is not on the ticket total but each ticket, if you follow.

Is there a restriction on the number of tickets you can buy as a student? Is it limited to just one admission per student at that price? I tend to think if that were the policy, they would have only sold you one ticket (for your use), and not two. It sounds like the rule is that students can buy tickets at a reduced rate and buying for a non-student guest is allowed.

You, as the purchaser, are entitled to the discounts. It’s like using your employee’s discount at work to buy stuff for your family. I don’t see any sin here at all. You were being frugal.

Yes, but there are Student tickets, Old-Age Pensioner and General Adult Tickets. I bought my student ticket with MY student discount, but the lady wanted to see student ID for my brother’s ticket, and I obviously didn’t have any. So she said ‘make sure he shows it at the gate with his ticket on the day of the game’. If I had been honest I should have said ‘One student and one adult ticket, please’.

What Im trying to say is, the discount is on an individual basis, not the total charge. So I bought my brothers ticket under false pretences didnt I?

yes you need to go to confession . You lied and you are guilty of theft . The discount tickets are for students , and as you say there are other tickets for other folks . Your conscience must have bothered you when she asked you to show student Id for your brother … wont you be embarassed if he cant use the other ticket ? Good for you that your conscience was bothered enough to ask . go to confesion and get relief ! good job 👍

I would say that this was deception and petty theft on your part, and should be confessed. It’s relatively minor, but it’s definitely abusing your privileges to purchase a student ticket for a brother that doesn’t qualify as a student.

You have to look at the big picture. You are thinking in terms of just one ticket. But how many hundreds if not thousands of dollars is the school losing every year because people lie about student versus general tickets just as you did?

Lying, deception, and stealing are all sinful actions. Period. You should confess.

I urge you to look into this a little further with your confessor . cheers

Still, the discount is for who buys the ticket, not who uses it.

Another case in point, if someone in a household purchases Microsoft Office Student Edition for the studen price, does that mean the non-students of the household are not allowed to use the software lest they are violating the license of the software?

It is a sin against the eigth commandment; committed with knowlege and consent it is a mortal sin.

However; speaking as an English non-student I have never been refused discount prices when I ask what the price would be “were I to pretend to be a Student”…

👍

You’re kidding, right?
A mortal sin must not only have knowledge and consent, it must also be a grave matter. Getting discounts on tickets is NOT a grave matter.

You’re saying you get student discount where possible anyway? So in other words I shouldn’t confess this?

You don’t need to confess it. Like I said, at worst it is a venial sin and it will be forgiven at Mass. Looks like you’re sorry for it already.

But to defend my position, first of all this is not a serious matter, so no way it can ever be a mortal sin. Second, you are a student. You did not pretend to be a student, you are a student. Therefore you are entitled to the discount. Did they even ask if the second ticket is for a student or not? If they did and you said it is for a student, then you are lying. If they didn’t but just gave you two tickets with the student discount, then you have done absolutely nothing wrong.

After having a think about this, I concluded that it isn’t a mortal sin anyway. Yes I committed the act with full knowledge and complete consent, but I don’t think saving my brother a few £’s is a mortal sin, considering the only person who misses out on the money saved is a large Rugby club. Or does anyone disagree?

Unless they’re for a Britney Spears concert 🙂
No, because you have to be out of your mind to want to go to a Britney Spears concert. Therefore there is no willful consent :D:D
bwahahahah! 😃

The sin is not getting the discount; the sin is lying.

If you activelly give false witness; a matter against the eigth commandment; you commit a grave sin.

Catechism
1858.
Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: “Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother.” The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger.

If you recieve a discount through persuasion; friendship or any other thing; that is fine. However; if you bear false witness to attain it; you commit a grave sin.

However; as you previously did not know this; you lacked the knowlege necessary to commit a Mortal sin (even though it was grave) so confession is not required; although still good.
A mortal sin must not only have knowledge and consent, it must also be a grave matter. Getting discounts on tickets is NOT a grave matter.
Getting discounts is not a grave matter. Lying to get them is.

Yes, I asked for two student price tickets the lady at the counter asked for a student ID for both myself and my brother, I told her I only had mine so she told me to make sure he produces his at the turnstile on the day of the game, In other words, I feel that I lied and defrauded the system.
