When having sex, is it a sin to orgasm within married life without the intent of having children, and without the use contraceptives? I thought the whole point to the build-up of sex was to orgasm in the end. Sex without orgasm just seems like a frustrated action.

It’s a sin to complete the act outside of the woman’s body. You must be open to the idea of children, but as we know there are times when women are not fertile. Sex is not prohibited as long as the act results in the sperm being deposited inside at the proper place. I never heard that it was a sin to orgasm if the woman is not able to conceive, though there’s no guaratee that a child cannot result as nature is hard to pin down. In that case, the sex act is unifying and fulfilling its secondary purpose.

It’s my understanding that a married couple must be open to life, and that engaging in sexual activity without completing the act vaginally is a sin. A couple may use NFP if the have a compelling reason for not wanting more children (serious health problems) or to help them space children appropriately. No, you cannot tease yourself for 30 minutes with oral or vaginal intercourse and then just not finish.

Of course not. The man must just orgasm in the proper place so the couple is open to the possibility of children, not just when the woman is fertile. No artificial contraceptives are permitted, but NFP may be used.

Sex intentionally without male orgasm (either through withdrawing or withholding) is gravely sinful. It has the same end as contraception, removing the procreative function from the conjugal act.

So are married couples only supposed to have sex once in their lives (for the purpose of having children) if it is a sin to do otherwise?

That is not what was the poster stated. The marital act, each act, must be ordered per se toward procreation. That means that each time a couple engages in the act, the act must be completed in the natural manner with no barriers/contraceptives/withdrawal/etc… just natural marital embrace. It does not mean that the couple must desire conception…they must be open to the possibility, however, and do nothing to thwart the procreative nature of the act. If a couple desires to not conceive, they are to abstain, a.k.a. observe periodic continence…yet should also recognize the importance of sharing in the marital embrace for other goods of the marital act. A couple with a just reason to avoid conception may observe the woman’s natural cycles and abstain from the act during her fertile period.

He did not say without orgasm.

I would put it differently:

Contracepted sex is forbidden. When we say “artificial contraception”, some might imply that there is a “natural contraception” i.e. NFP, which isn’t contraception at all.
