Is driving home from our family vacation a valid reason to miss Mass?

I would say no, you should check what parishes are available where you are at and attend one of them.

The only time you should miss mass is when there is a grave or serious reason.

If you were driving home on a Sunday couldn’t you pull off into a small town in the morning and attend mass? Most offer mass around 9AM. It’s what we always do. I suppose this is trickier if you’ve driven all through the night, but if you’ve stopped, why not just go to mass when you wake up? Or go on Saturday night?

I would not miss for this reason.

If you knew that Jesus was hanging on the Cross in a town somewhere on your route home, would you have stopped to see Him? Could you have? Now, after you ponder that thought (since the Mass IS the passion death and resurrection of our Lord made present to us) you can answer your own question. God graced you with a vacation, remember that…teachccd 🙂
