is this Absolution valid?

Hi

If a priest says “Through the ministry of the Church, I absolve you, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit” but omits the rest of the prayer (about God reconciling the world to Himself, etc)… is the absolution valid?

I read on Catholic Encyclopedia that the essential part are the words “I absolve you” but just wanted to check

As you read, the essential words are “I absolve you.” But I do wish priests would simply say the prayer of absolution and not leave people wondering. It’s a beautiful prayer!

You are absolved. Don’t worry. As long as you and the priest ascended, in a meeting of the minds, & your desire was to be absolved & it was your desire to confess, trust that Christ knows your heart & you are absolved of your sins. Don’t let the technicalities trip you up. Christ knows your heart. Now, go on with happiness!

Those are the essential words for a valid absolution to occur. So yes.

However, even though such a situation would be a valid absolution, it might or might not constitute a licit celebration of the sacrament of confession. In danger of death, or other extreme and out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, it would be licit, because the Church provides for such situations.

The Catholic Encyclopedia is NOT a handbook of sacramental or pastoral theology.

And if this is a 1911 (or so) on-line version, you can hardly expect it to keep up with revised rites.
