Is this an abuse?

I went to mass on Sunday and after we did the Creed , the priest comes up to the alter and starts making church announcements. I have seen him do this before right before the consecration of the bread and wine. It was very irritating to me. Is this an abuse? should I say something to the priest?
 
That’s weird. Usually announcements are before Mass begins or just before the benediction.
 
As far as I know, that would be an abuse. The proper time for announcements is either during the sermon, or following the Post-Communion Prayer.

When you say “right before the consecration of the bread and wine” do you mean during the Eucharistic Prayer itself?
 
Yes , he wanted everyone to know that we couldn’t go into a certain building because of construction. This could have been done after mass.

Was this the only announcement he made at that time?

Sounds like it might have been a safety issue. Perhaps he meant to mention it during the homily and forgot; perhaps there is a number of people at Mass that don’t quite make it until the end.

If this was a one-time thing and not the habitual place for announcements, I wouldn’t give it a second thought. Maybe an abuse, certainly not a major one.

If you are concerned then talk to the priest but remember to be polite and not confrontational.
 
It’s probably illicit for a priests to give random announcements during the Consecration, however I don’t believe that it would invalidate the Mass.

It sounds a little like this isn’t a one-time deal. If it’s not, I would urge you to seriously consider speaking to the priest about it…he may not even realize that he does it. Just remember to be charitable!

If you want to learn more about Eucharistic Abuses I would highly recommend reading through the encyclicals Redemptionis Sacramentum or Ecclessia de Eucharistia. I’ve studied them and they are excellent resources.
 
Moving the announcements, which let’s face it, read the bulletin folks, from the allowed place near the end of Mass to the line of demarcation between the two Liturgies is a practice that our Episcopalian brethren have been engaging in as of late. Perhaps someone attended Mass at an Episcopalian parish and made the suggestion to this church’s liturgy committee and they got Father to go with it.

He actually is a convert from the Episcopalian church. This probably explains why he does it.
 
Maybe you could write to him or have a conversation where you compliment him on something else but bring this up. Let him know that you found it distracting from the Eucharist. You could also let him know the church doesn’t allow announcements at that time which made you really uncomfortable as well.
