i have no clue where to put this, but my friend wanted to know if this organization is ok to support from a Catholic perspective.

plan-international.org/girls/

she asked me, but i have no clue on ok charities/organizations from bad ones. Does anyone here know?

thanks!

I never heard of this organization and therefore wouldn’t send them a dime until I heard some independent group of charity evaluators say 90% of the money actually gets to the girls’s education.

There is a good chance this is just a racket. It’s a cruel world out there, folks. 😦

I’ve been searching the internet and can’t find anything about this organization actually doing anything for anybody anywhere in the world. Not is there any such information on their own website.

So why would you donate to them? 😊 🤷

Keep digging.

You can read their first three annual reports here:

becauseiamagirl.ca//learn/because-i-am-girl-report

But… as for me… I am quite interested in what percentage of the income generated from their “Because I Am A Girl” campaign actually makes it into the hands of the individual girls and women featured in their videos/sponsorship stories (as opposed to other NGOs) and how much of that cash is actually used by the organization to cover “overhead” and other expenses. I wasn’t able to find this information. 🤷

Some Canadian criticism here… especially in one of the comments! (NOTE: this is from 3 years ago) -

It does not give a list of its sponsors or board. I would be doubtful about it until more can be learned and I don’t know how to advise you on that. There are a lot of Catholic organizations she could give to that are " pro-gril." along with supporting Catholic values. I would and do support these. And I would make it as local as possibe, it is easier to see what they are doing.

I read those reports earlier. Did you?

They give not a shred of evidence they’ve done anything for anybody anywhere.
That’s my objection.

I tend to not want to give to organizations that have people out on the sidewalk asking for money (Red Cross I guess is an exception). The good thing is their people have bright pink on so you can plan your avoidance a block away.
