Actually you are correct when you state that he will have to undergo some studies especially if he considers continuing in the Priestly vocation. This is normal and as many others have already pointed out he could have misspoken, misinterpreted or has an incomplete understanding of the Dogma on the Immaculate Conception. All in all not really a big deal, lets welcome him into the fold of the Church with open arms and hope he can continue his ministry.
