My dad is VERY spiritual (meditation and astral projection). As a catholic and the fact he is my dad and helped me alot i have agreed that i am fine with him listening to the CD Opera has come out with (idk what it is really called). As i recently learned it is a sin to become spiritual and listen to things out of our faith. Does this mean i have to turn it off every time my dad listens to it?

I have been here for a short time but I realize that in america (maybe you are not american !!!) besides the 10 commandments, there are hundreds of others sinful matters whtat there are in no other part of the world.

How come? Listening to music is a sin?

If it were my top neighboring’ s noise when they are in sexual activities (even so !), but this one !!!

If so, I can only listen Bach,Palestrin, not all Beethoven symponies and from the 19th century nothing

I’m sure your Dad means well, but no, seeking astral projection is not permitted for Catholics or Christians. Christianity does have means for spiritual meditation, but I suspect that isn’t the kind of meditation your Dad is pursuing if he is seeking astral projection

Unfortunately your Dad seems to have been prey to New Age practices
He doesn’t pray at all, he is very open to Christianity, and surprisingly, he said that’s his main religion but he takes some of budhist(idk how to spell it) and others. I never heard him talk about New Age relilgion he just likes to meditate.

“Astral projection” is a red flag! No practicing Christian should have anything to do with that. It is not from God. It is something that is under the umbrella of “New Age” practices of which there are many.

The sites that were given are informative about these things, and how dangerous they are. They lead one away from the Lord, and not to Him.

  1. It is NOT a sin to “become spiritual”!!! We are to “be in the spirit”, “moved by the spirit” and baptized of the spirit. The problem lies in what type of spirituality we are talking about and what the particular methods and goals are. The Church’s history is chock full of wonderfully spiritual people from St Therese of Liseaux to John of the Cross, to the early desert fathers.
Your father might benefit from the book in my signature below. It is a summary and distillation of the teachings of the great mystic doctors of the Church. You might benefit from it too.
  1. It is NOT a sin to listen to something outside the faith. If that were so, many here would be in trouble since we “listen” to (and/or) read various things outside the faith in order to understand and to help others who might be struggling in error.
I don’t know what the CD is that you refer to, whether it is music or chanting or whatever, but be comforted that if it is on where you can hear it, that does not mean you are “listening” (turning your attention) to it.
Peace
James

Its not chanting, it’s more like a Q and A podcast Oprah Winfrey has on her website about her spiritual side and answers questions relating to the book and joined by the author aswell. Sometimes i do actually listen and try to understand what they are saying, i do not practice these nor do i believe in the new age, but just wondering if it was bad for me to do so.

Yes, you shouldn’t become involved in any way in these things.
You could ask God to help your Dad to understand that as a Catholic and a Christian, he should turn away from these things and learn about true Catholic spirituality and Christian meditation, and above all, to seek God and his true self in the Sacraments.

God bless you and your Dad

My former friends meditate and astro travel. Their experiences and what they’ve told me a long time ago…now that I think about them are very frightening! Some were positive like they felt very rested and saw glimpses of the future. However, they also spoke of different realms throughout this world such as “gateways” and how you can communicate with the dead. Also if you see something very beautiful in the astral realm it is something of GREAT evil. DON’T go near it. You have a higher chance to become possessed through astro traveling since you basically are leaving your body. Some stories they tell me about they walk outside and it’s a completely different world where there are animals and all sorts of things in the sky. Some say you can even talk to said “Gods” while astro traveling! Even enter someone Else’s dreams. Scary stuff you should pray for your dad! I’m sure he’s fine and likes to experiment with it but like previous posts there are better ways of meditation through Christ!
