This is a comment I made on my facebook page -
"When God said,“Let there be light”, Rajnikanth said,“First, say “please”.”
This was in response to an already funny status that I had put up -
The world will not end in 2012. You know why? Because Rajnikanth just got a laptop with a 3 year warranty.
My question is, did I indulge in blasphemy?

P.S. Look up “Rajnikanth facts” to see who he is!!

DK who this Rajnikanth is, but I sense it’s along the same lines of Chuck Norris jokes?
I thought that quote was pretty funny, myself…as to being blasphemy, that’s not for me to say, as I don’t have the beliefs you do…but I’d think not, it’s just light hearted humor.

-ah, looked him up on Google…wonderful thing, Google is…sounds like an Indian Chuck Norris, yeah?

Ya, it’s similar to Chuck Norris jokes, but it should be noted that Chuck Norris was trained by Rajnikanth. If you watch Rajnikanth stuff on youtube, you will forget Chuck Norris.

As long as you made it clear that it was a ridiculous comment and obviously untrue, just funny, then I don’t see how it could be blasphemy.

CCC 2148 Blasphemy is directly opposed to the second commandment. It consists in uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God; in failing in respect toward him in one’s speech; in misusing God’s name. St. James condemns those “who blaspheme that honorable name [of Jesus] by which you are called.” The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ’s Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God’s name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God’s name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion.
Blasphemy is contrary to the respect due God and his holy name. It is in itself a grave sin.

I disagree. Even if he did all that, it is disrespectful to God to misuse His Holy Name and the words of His Holy Scripture for such a profane purpose. So I would say this particular action is a blasphemy, albeit a very mild one.

We don’t want to give people the false impression that Catholics have no sense of humour. But I think that there is so much blasphemy in the world today that it is not a good idea to add to it even in a very small way.

Do you really think this may have been blasphemy?

What do you mean or understand by blasphemy?

I don’t think this is blasphemy, but a Catholic friend of mine told me that I was blaspheming. So I deleted that comment, but I still want to find out whether this could be considered to be blasphemy.

i looked up the Catechism for the definition of blasphemy. The only way my comment could be called blasphemous is by the use of the clause “irreverance for God” in the definition. I don’t think my intention was to be irreverant to God in any way, but I still want people’ opinions.

It’s only misuse if he did it knowing people would see it and think it was true. But it was a joke, and an obvious one at that. He wasn’t profaning anything because it’s pretty clear that what he said wasn’t true.

Ah, but condemning silly little jokes like this is WHY people accuse Catholics of having no sense of humor; one innocent little joke and we Catholics need to run around yelling “Blasphemy!” instead of chuckling at it for what it is-an innocent, silly little joke.

I think it’s pretty clear that The Life of Brian is intended as a joke and it’s pretty clear that it’s not true. But it is blasphemy.

I am not running around and yelling at anyone. The OP asked us for our opinions whether these words constituted blasphemy. I am as entitled to give my opinion as you are, without being subject to false accusations from you.

I have never heard any Catholic teaching that says so. Why do you say so? “God” is a title. But a name? I have never heard of that.
See Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2142 to 2155.

note esp,
2146 “The Second Commandment forbids the abuse of the names of God, Jesus Christ, but also of the Virgin Mary and all the saints.”
2148 Blasphemy is directly opposed to the Second Commandment. It consists in uttering against God - …failing in respect towards Him in one’s speech; in misusing God’s Name. … Blasphemy is contrary to the respect due to God and His Holy Name. It is in itself a grave sin."
2155 “The holiness of the Divine Name demands that we neither use it for trivial matters, …”
