We had to sign school documents, both my husband and my daughter. No open book testing unless the teacher specifically states its allowed. No use of books or notes while taking the tests or quizzes.

Live classroom question and answers, phone call conferences with the teachers, essay tests, etc. There are multiple ways they “test” the student. If you have been using a book for the tests when you shouldn’t, its eventually going to become apparent.

I think there is some confusion. My understanding of the OT is with regard to online classes. Say across the country. A live classroom is not online… nor a phone call. Yes, there are multiple ways. But if the class is online… so are the tests. So, really, we’re talking apples and oranges.

Got the idea from my husband’s professors, as he is taking his graduate degree through online courses. Same with my daughter’s cyberschool. All tests are closed book, unless otherwise stated by the teacher/professor and if it is determined they have used their notes or an open book for a test, they can be expelled.

And from the fact that your husband and daughter are required to do their assignments closed-book you deduced the general principle that ‘online schools would lose their credibility etc etc’?

The conclusion doesn’t follow the premises at all. Certain disciplines in fact CAN’T be taught effectively, at least at a tertiary level, using only closed-book exams or assignments, as I tried to show above. Those disciplines require the capacity for thinking and research and absorption of new learning, not just memorisation, which is all that really can be tested by closed-book exams.
