I’m not sure if this is really cheating what do you think?

One question asked write 60 as a product of prime numbers. I couldn’t be bothered to work out the question so I Googled it, found the answers and wrote them in. Is this cheating? As I did it I thought it could be wrong but wasn’t to sure as I had googled homework questions in the past.

I suppose it might be considered cheating, but the purpose of homework is generally to improve your skills. When you just google the answer, you’re really cheating yourself more than anything else.

Also, I’m sorry, but I just have to say that googling this particular question seems almost not worth the trouble:

60 = 30 * 2 = 15 * 2 * 2 = 5 * 3 * 2 * 2

Yes, it is. The purpose of a homework assignment is to reinforce the lesson that was taught in class. If you cannot be bothered to actually learn the lesson and solidify that knowledge by practicing it (i.e. doing the homework assignment), you have indeed swindled yourself out of that aspect of your education.

Your teacher, young person, wanted you to use your little grey cells to work out that problem for yourself. The purpose of the homework assignment wasn’t to see if you knew how to Google but to check your understanding of prime numbers. :tsktsk:

There would have been nothing wrong with using Google to check your answers after you’d completed your assignment as long as your teacher was aware of your doing this.

Math teacher here…

Yes, it is cheating. Most importantly, it is cheating yourself. As a teacher, I weight the homework very little. Most of my students’ grades come from quizzes and tests. The REAL question is would you be able to do this on a pop quiz or a test?

I have had students in the past who were BRILLIANT. However, they were lazy. As a result, their grades reflected their laziness, and they missed opportunities for advanced and accelerated coursework, which would have enabled them even more opportunities.

Is your homework counted as part of your grade? If so, yes, it’s definitely cheating.

If not, it’s still cheating, but cheating only yourself. Sometimes to learn stuff we have to do it the hard way. 🤷

No it’s not.

But how is cheating a sin? How does it sever our relationship with God and neighbor?
It is not a sin in the sense of your gaining a benefit to which you were not entitled (stealing), because as others have pointed out, by avoiding the real exercise, you did not gain any benefit. In fact, you actually avoided a benefit. If this particular example was a sin, then it was a sin of deception (lying). But you have not told us enough to determine if there was any lie. You just said that it was not part of your grade. Was the homework turned in at all? Or was it just a suggestion for you to practice or not as you chose? If it was your choice to do or not do the homework, then there was no sin. (But you still cheated yourself out of an opportunity to learn.). But if the answer was turned in, or in some other way given to the teacher or announced in class as evidence that you did the exercise, then you were lying. You were saying essentially “I did the exercise as requested.” when in fact you did not. Habituating yourself to deception does tend to make you less respectful of the truth. And that will damage, if not sever, your relationship with God and with other people. As far as the purpose of that particular class goes, it is exactly as if you had not done the problem at all.

Thank you for all your answers. The homework was to be done on a website. The first time I did it cheating I didn’t get all the questions right. But you are allowed to re-do it which I have just done without cheating and I got 100% right. I cheated out of pure laziness and now I have to seek Sacramental absolution. I wish I had just done it the first time without cheating.

Thank You for all your replies.
May God Bless you all abundantly in this life and the next.

It’s more of a venial sin, I wouldn’t sweat it. All part of the learning process. 👍
