Is this cheating?

For one of my classes, I have a test coming up. I overheard a person who had already taken the test tell another person something to study (i am assuming that means it is on the test). I had not studied this information and i am wondering if i should or should not study what i overheard. would it be a sin if i were to study this material that i heard these people talking about?

I don’t think it would be a sin. If the material is going to be on the test, presumably you should be studying it anyway. If you overheard someone discussing the actual answers to the test, like they had taken it before you and were going over the answers to the questions, then it would be cheating to purposefully act on that. If you overheard so and so say that the answer to question 15 is C and you get to the test and the answer is C you don’t have to purposely get it wrong, but it would have been wrong if you made a list or something of the answers you overheard.

You need to study, so what’s the problem with getting advice on what to study Your teacher/professor would probably also advise you to study. You didn’t get the answers and blindly memorize them. You are just expanding what you need to study.

So study!

And if you’re in college/university, you can sometimes get copies of previous exams provided by the professors. My school had an office where you could request previous exams for specific courses – great study resources!

Assumptions are dangerous. You should study anyways. Actually, something similar happened to me recently. For an interestingly irrelevant reason, half of my class took the exam on one particular day, and half took the exam a week later. I was in the later half. The day before the exam, one of the gentlemen in the first half gave me some advice as to what to study. Well, his advice was on my list of things to study, so I bumped that to the front of my list, and I still had time for the stuff that I was going to study anyways. Well, after taking the exam, I began to question how much this individual liked me, because I didn’t find his advice overly helpful!

What I’m saying is, you’re totally off the hook. There is no sin on your part, in any of your multitudinous courses of action.

In addition to that, my post sort of alluded to a more practical side for your situation. You now have to decide on whether the source is trustworthy enough to alter your study plan.
