Is this cheating?

In some of my college classes, my professors will put their tests online. We can take the test at any time we would like, so we can easily access our notes. They could easily give these tests out in class, but instead they would rather have an off day. They have never said that our notes are not allowed, but I don’t know what to do. Obviously I am there to learn, and I want to see what I know, but is it cheating to look at my notes if I am stuck on some questons?

This is not cheating to use your materials. All your professors are aware that online tests allow for this. Unless there’s some honor code policy, and the instructors specifically say not to. At least, that’s how I’d judge it. All of my professors would chuckle when someone would ask if they can use their notes or books on an online exam. Generally the response they would give is “how can I stop you?”

Seriously? It’s hard to define cheating when tests are given in a take-home (including online) fashion. Sometimes professors will play lip service to no outside help or notes/books/whatever, but don’t really care (and aren’t really able) to investigate if their students are following the rules. Pretty much, it’s the honor system. During in-class exams, professors generally explicitly state whether or not notes/books/etc. are allowed (and if notes are allowed, the extent to which they’re allowed - single notecard, single sheet of paper, the entire notebook, etc.). But if you’re concerned, ask the professor during his/her office hours. Because if it’s allowed by the professor, it’s not cheating.

Ultimately your Education is up to you, do you wish to succeed ?
It’s up to you,if you need to check notes, and the notes are there , then why not look ,
Because those notes are a part of your knowledge ,

When I give an assignment or test online it is with the expectation that students will use their notes, class handouts, etc. If I don’t want students to use outside materials I give the test in class.

I mean this is what I figured, but I just felt kind of bad since I did really well mainly because of my notes and worksheets

All rules regarding taking tests should be in your course syllabus. More and more professors are moving to working with the class more online rather than in the classroom, which has a lot of benefits and drawbacks–particularly since many would say the consultation of notes during an online test is forbidden, but have absolutely no way of enforcing that rule.

I work as a tutor at a college, so I see this firsthand a lot.

Personally if it’s not banned, I see nothing wrong with using notes, etc for help. In the real world, at a job, you would have such sources around and would refer to them. In real life, people rarely memorize everything, they just know where the answers are and seek them out. I honestly think that’s a better method for teachers to use- not can you memorize something, but can you find the answer? So as long as it’s not disallowed, I would say that means it’s okay.
