If I am talking to someone such as my sister, cousin, or friend about a friend who has not been a good friend to me and describe a situation of why I am upset with her or why I think she is rude, is that considered gossip?? And, let’s say it’s vice versa - if a friend was to talk to you about someone they were upset with or hurt them, is it wrong to say “that’s rude of them” or talk about them also (not name calling or any of that, just saying if they think what that person did was mean or not, etc. )

kind of…because they dont really need to know that information, that is between you and that friend and by telling them you could be painting a bad image of that friend in their minds and opening the conversation up to gossip…

I think the main difference is intent. Is it being said for someone’s well being (either you warning friends, or looking for advice on the situation), or is it to harm someone’s reputation? Remember that the same action can be good or bad depending on the intent.

I agree on the intent. I am not trying to harm anyone or ruin anyone’s reputation, I just like to talk to my friends or people I trust about situations that have happened; sometimes just to make conversation, or to get their opinion/advice and it also makes me feel better to say how I feel. But, I am not trying to harm anyone by talking

The best thing is those situations (“if a friend was to talk to you about someone they were upset with”) is to help this person work toward forgiveness and reconciliation with the other person.

Catechism of the Catholic Church
2477 Respect for the reputation of persons forbids every attitude and word likely to cause them unjust injury.278
He becomes guilty:
  • of **rash judgment **who, even tacitly, assumes as true, without sufficient foundation, the moral fault of a neighbor;
  • of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them;279
  • of calumny who, by remarks contrary to the truth, harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgments concerning them.
2478 To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way:
Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another’s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.280
2479 **Detraction and calumny **destroy the reputation and honor of one’s neighbor. Honor is the social witness given to human dignity, and everyone enjoys a natural right to the honor of his name and reputation and to respect. Thus, detraction and calumny offend against the virtues of justice and charity.

You sound very sincere. Just be careful that about using it to ‘make conversation’, but everything else sounds fine. This is a bit of a struggle for me, which is ironic because my friends know how much I like to talk yet still tell me things about other people!

I think this is a difficult situation because this is how women work out their thoughts/ feelings about a situation. Perhaps if you consider how the information you’re passing on to your friend will affect their opinion of the person you’re talking about and if that friend is likely to pass on the information in a way that might actually become gossip or hurt the person’s reputation it would help you to decide what to do.

The sin of slander is speaking lies about someone. The sin of detraction is damaging someone’s reputation by speaking the truth about them to someone who has no need to know that information.

So, will speaking the way you describe damage someone’s reputation?

I don’t think talking to a family member such as a sister or husband about the situation would be considered gossip.

Thanks 🙂 this is a struggle for me too, i have gotten a lot better though about talking about my friends to other friends but now I usually talk about it mostly when I’m upset about something because it helps me feel better, especially to get some feedback. But, I definitley learned to only talk to people I fully trust. But, some people might consider it gossiping and others don’t. For example, my sister does not think this would be gossiping, but one of my friends thinks just mentioning someone else’s name or saying if what they did was rude is gossiping. To me, I don’t know if it’s gossiping or not, but i don’t see anything wrong to say what someone did was rude or not nice - it’s just the truth.

Even though it may be the truth, as noted above, it is important to remember who needs to know the truth (not lying, but you aren’t obligated to tell every person every truth that you have) and what effect it will have on the opinions of the person you are talking to.

I have two older sisters who haven’t spoken to one another (with love) since highschool. (I’m almost 51).

The constant and continual “she said, he said, and then she said back” gossip, defamation of character and unforgiveness have contributed to their inability to reconcile.

So am I committing this sin by discussing things about my relationship with my husband on this forum? You all don’t NEED to know that information, but it IS the truth (from my POV).

It’s not gossip, but it is detraction, which is just as bad, detraction is the sin of revealing something about another that is true but harmful to that person’s reputation, while gossip is more along the lines of idle talk, usually repeating something you’ve heard about someone that can ruin their reputation, or which is simply none of your business, and which may or may not be true,

but talking to someone about the unknown faults of others is a sin against detraction, even if others know of a persons sins or faults, it’s still detraction to tell someone who was not aware of it, “Keep yourselves therefore from murmuring, which profiteth nothing, and refrain your tongue from detraction, for an obscure speech shall not go for nought: and the mouth that belieth, killeth the soul.” - Wisdom 1:11
and the degree of sin depends on the degree of sin or fault revealed, but i would recommend talking with your priest about that, or whatever priest you go to for confession
.
and yes, it is also a sin to listen to detraction willingly,
everyone has a right to their reputation, whether they deserve it or not, and to robe someone of their reputation is a sin against justice, even if what you reveal is true, that does not justify it’s disclosure,

however, talking to someone, or “blowing off steam” with someone who already knows the faults of the person who was upsetting you is not detraction, although it’s still not “good” to do, but it’s not as serious,
you just have to use discretion, or just play it safe and don’t talk bad about others at all, although there are times which call for us to reveal something about someone we know for their own good and safety, but usually that involves telling a priest or their parents, and there are also other circumstances that call for us to reveal someones serious faults or bad intentions when they are or may hurt themselves or others by it…but that really doesn’t apply to your situation.

another reason it’s bad to talk about someone this way, is because if that person decides to repent, and really change their ways for the better, those around them will hardly let them forget their past faults, especially the more serious they were.
so not only would it be a sin against justice, but also charity,

although i know it’s hard, when someones really getting on your nerves, and you just need someone to vent to,
but some good ways to stop yourself, and also make yourself calm down and feel better, are first of all, say a prayer, even just a little one…and then think to yourself what complaining about it will profit you, it may make you feel better for a little bit, but they will only get on your nerves again, and even if you can escape them, someone else always comes along, and to complain also doesn’t help you spiritually, otherwise Jesus would have done it, but instead He didn’t complain, to show us that we do ourselves and others better by enduring things silently and patiently.
another thing to do, is to offer it up with the sacrifice prayer the Fatima children used so very much - “O Jesus, it is for love of Thee, for the conversion of sinners, in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and for the Holy Father.”
and although you may want to offer up your sufferings, yet for some reason, whenever i say this prayer, it seems like my suffering becomes lighter,
i think it’s because, when we help Jesus to carry His cross by accepting our own, then He in turn lightens our burden by helping us to carry ours.

you can also go to church or adoration when you are feeling upset, and just sit there with Jesus and talk with Him about it, or just let Him speak to you in your heart, and i can guarantee that after doing that, you will feel alot better.

there is no need to go to anyone but Jesus with your troubles, unload them on Him, because He can turn them into something profitable…whereas unloading on anyone else will profit us nothing except a temporary relief.
and it is no burden on Jesus to take our sufferings from us, He knows what to do with them, whereas to unload them on others will only burden them as well,
although don’t get me wrong here, i’m not talking about crying on someones shoulder, which is an act of charity for the person letting you cry on their shoulder, i’m only talking about more petty things, or other things that aren’t so devastating. although we should go to Jesus with those things to, but it’s ok if we need to cry on someone else also.

another good thing to do would be to get a good spiritual director, because you can also unload these things on him, and he will give you better advice and help on how to overcome your faults(not just detraction) and he may even be able to help you so that you don’t get angry with your friend(or whoever) at all, which is absolutely possible, it just takes a deeper and more perfect love of God and your neighbor.

well, i don’t want to make this to long, but if you have any other questions at all concerning this, i’d be glad to try and help further,
so i hope this helps, take care.

(To TheRealJuliane) - the answer to your question is no, it’s not detraction because those who read your posts here don’t know you or your husband…atleast i assume not…but if not, then no, it’s not wrong, because you are seeking help anonymously, and not merely for the sake of conversation or complaining.

why are you telling? To vent? To get advice? or just to make conversation or get sympathy? If you are asking for advice about how to handle a situation, then it’s not gossiping. But if you are just talking to be talking or to elicit sympathy for the ‘rude’ thing someone else did, then it may be gossip. Certainly, telling someone who doesn’t need to know (ie not the other person’s boss, or someone you’ve gone to for advice) is not something we should do. So even if it is true, if the other person doesn’t need to know you shouldn’t tell.

Gossip is a sin I struggle with quite a bit, so it’s something I’ve learnt a lot about. Usually I find I really didn’t need to share and that it would have been much better if I hadn’t. 😦

That’s a bad topic you choose to “just to make a conversation”. There are thousands of other topics. However, you are not the only one in this cruel world to do that.

I see people who likes to choose such topic as a group of losers who try to look good by making the other group (people who are winners) look bad.

Everytime somebody talk negatively about somebody else, I would respond to him/ her by only listening. They may have some sincere anger to vent, or some good intention for my sake. So fine, I’ll listen. I do not pass those to others.

No, this is advice-giving.

When you start talking about someone just for a laugh, or to feel superior, or something like that, then that is gossip.

I try to respond by turning the conversation. As you say there are a million other things to talk about. How 'bout them Dawgs! 😃

If someone truly needs advice, and I am an appropriate person to ask, I will listen and offer whatever advice I can, but my goal is not not talk badly about others and not listen to that type of conversation.

Juliane. I will be truthful, I have a hard time discerning for myself, what is “gossip” and what is “this bothers me , I need to talk.”

I think in your case it is the latter.

We do not know your husband’s name or what he looks like. You write to get a Catholic POV not to ruin his reputation.

With me I have 1 close friend and 1 sister. Sometimes I share things with them re my MIl or their MIL etc. It isn’t to bad mouth any one, but more like venting.

So if you’re dealing with a very difficult situation with someone and you kind of just needed to talk to someone…
Having done so, the situation is still troublesome, would it be okay to discuss it with someone else for (name removed by moderator)ut/just for an outlet, would it be considered detraction and against the commandments to talk about the situation with a different person?
The person is being very difficult and it might be helpful to talk to another person I know who has been a good confidant in the past.

To avoid gossip when asking for advice about dealing with someone, I would avoid identifying the problematic person, just lay out the issues and ask for advice on how to handle them. You “sister” doesn’t need to know that “Alice at work” blah blah blah, rather you could just say “a co-worker”… KWIM?
