I have been to the ER a few times in the past month, thinking I was having a heart problem because of chest pains. I have been diagnosed with costochodritis (inflammation of rib cartilage) and atypical chest pain. My husband has made it clear that unless I have more pressing symptoms of a heart attack, he doesn’t want me to go to the ER anymore.

I see a cardiologist in a couple days to get a complete workup. My question is, what if I start having stronger chest pains, or other symptoms, and I’m not sure if I’m having a heart attack or not.

If I’m not sure, then if I don’t go to the ER and die, will God consider that suicide? I don’t want to die. I have a child who I want to be around for as long as possible. But, would God consider that suicide if I didn’t get help, because I wasn’t sure I was having real heart problems or not?

Thank you. Sorry so long.

PS. I have anxiety and am also being treated for that

I would suggest you speak to your cardiologist about your concerns and ask about when you need to seek help, maybe take your husband with you.
It is important to look after your body.

Everything is going to be fine.
Keep your Cardiologist appointment.
If it is in fact rib pain, perhaps he can recommend a DO, or go ahead and suggest some exercises for physical therapy that would strengthen these muscles and lessen the amount and frequency the pain is present.
Cardiologists seem to be some of the best, patient, and persistent physicians. They indeed are physicians in the true sence. I’ve seen 4 of them over the years and all are rather like that Dr OZ on TV. The common thread; THEY LISTEN, they don’t assume.

Anxiety can be a big problem in and of itself. It happens more frequently in Women, but also Occurs in men. Rember EVERY human being has some.
It in fact does affect the way we feel, react to and deal with different things. This is a natural part of our make up. It is the way God made us.
We ALL have the capacity to have our Anxiety run rampant. DO NOT BE ASHAMED of this reaction. DO PRAY.

Though I do not have severe anxiety, I am a normal worrier. I also have suffered some mild depression after a serious surgery. I know that Praying helped me. I still pray to St. Dymphna to help me pray to God for relief of the emotional torture of the worry and depression when it flows. It is such a relief when it ebbs.

I also pray to St. Luke to help when I have chest pain. (St Luke was a physician.) My pain is cardiac related, but no chest pain should be ignored. In time and with the aid of the physicians, you will soon be able to tell the difference.

As far as a sin, many folks don’t have the resources (money etc) to go to doctors let alone the ER, so I highly doubt it is considered suicide with any stretch of the imagination. My thoughts on that are along the same lines as caring for another and deciding to do extraordinary vs. ordinary healthcare measures. E.G. whether an action, or inaction is euthanasia or not.

God Bless

Praying for you to have a complete recovery so that you do not have any additional burdens on your heart. God bless you.

  1. God EXPECTS and gives to each of us the capacity to be “Good Stewarts” of what He has given to us. Our bodies and halth included.
IF you feel sick enough to go to the ER then DO IT:)

If you choose out of fear is it suicide? NO-- FOOLISH 😊 but not “suicide.”

God Bless,

WELCOME HOME!

Thanks for the replies. I just get so scared that I could go to hell if I didn’t get help in time, because God would think I didn’t want to live. But, I believe He knows our hearts, and if that is so, He knows I want to live.

Get whatever medical help that you feel you need, but try not to become too distressed in the process.
I have had the conditions you describe for decades. But then, in my late 50s, I had a real cardiac problem that I let go for almost too long, telling myslef that it was “the same as before”. This is emphaticly NOT to frighten you, just to say that God wants us to care for the bodies He has given us to live in. But He also would not condemn anyone to hell over a lack of knowledge about what is going on within you.
Do your best, & trust in Our Lord & His love for you. My prayers are with you.

God bless.

…so your husband is a pshychic doctor?

…as I understand it heart attacks can hit even without the slightest signs… as far as your consequent death if you are kept from seeking help, your husband would be to blame if a false call turns out to be a possitive… I know times are hard but you can, if the hospital is close enough, take a taxi instead of calling an ambulance to get an expert’s opinion… now, if you suffer from anxiety attacks and you believe that you are augmenting the issue (running for the hospital instead of taking the nitro pill) I would suggest that you ask your doctor for a full list of signs, monitor your activities (food, stress, exercise, work, confrontational issues, etc.) to develop a feel for the possible reasons why you get chest pains… if everything is normal, see a speciallist… no, not your husband! :p:p:p
