Well I’ve had a boyfriend for around 5 months, and I’ve come to love him very much. He’s nothing but sweet to me and has been my best friend and companion for almost a year, as we just got together in March. Though… He is a transgendered male, as he is biologically female. I feel very conflicted now… as I love him so much. I don’t want to lose him. He also wants to enter the Catholic faith, but I’m uncertain how I should go about this. It pains me so much to think that we might not be able to stay together, he’s the love of my life…

This is an extremely awkward and no doubt painful situation for you. I’m sorry you’re in it. But let’s be clear about something. Sex is a biological fact. The configuration of your genitals are one expression of sex but they are not your sex in its entirety. Which means changing your genitals doesn’t change your sex. If, today, I lost my genitals in a car accident, I would still be a man. Because my maleness does not consist in my having male genitals.

You say your “boyfriend” is biologically female. OK, well, that means your “boyfriend” is, in fact, a female – “femaleness” being a biological fact which no external surgery can change. Which means you don’t have a boyfriend, you have a girlfriend.

Since you are, presumably, also a female, that means you are involved in a same-sex romantic relationship. I hope you understand that this is forbidden. It means that your relationship (at least the romantic elements of it) must end. It’s up to you, as a matter of prudence, to decide the level of contact you can both sustain that will not prove a near occasion of sin.

You are fortunate in that yours has been a relatively short relationship. It is perhaps imprudent to be declaring this person the “love of your life” on the basis of so short a time together. I promise you that you can leave and move on and you will be fine.

You do not have a boyfriend because “He” is not a he. He is a she. You are a she. You can **never **marry this person, so I suggest you end this relationship now as it will only get worse. The purpose of dating is to discern marriage.

Please seek spiritual counseling from your priest, I am not sure why you did not understand the impossibility of “dating” another woman from the outset.

Regarding the Catholic faith, I certainly hope that your friend will seek guidance from a competent priest.

He also wants to enter the Catholic faith, but I’m uncertain how I should go about this.
I’m with the others. You both can only be friends as you both are females. As to her entering the Catholic faith, she will need to have a really long talk with a really good priest.

God bless!!

May I ask…why do you…“feel very conflicted now”…?

I felt conflicted because I love him, but he’s not biologically male…

We can often be fooled by our emotions.

Please seek counsel from your priest. This is a seriously disordered relationship.

I think he means, why are you allowing yourself to feel conflicted. The way forward for you is clear. You are involved in a romantic relationship with a woman. This is forbidden. You must leave. There’s no conflict here, just difficulty. 1ke’s advice is sound.

You are in a relationship with a female. I agree with the other posters, you need to be “just friends” if possible, and if not, explain that it is prudent not to see each other, at least until you can get your emotions under control. Perhaps after some time and prayer, you will be able to have a friendship again. I don’t know if there is a church teaching about a woman pretending to be a man, however, I don’t think it was right of her if she started a relationship with you under the premise that she was a man. Perhaps that isn’t the case and you knew all along, but I know a woman who dated another woman for nearly half a year and considered her her boyfriend before she told her the truth! I think that’s a horrible thing to do to someone and I wouldn’t mess around with someone who was that deceptive. (or delusional)
