Is this detraction?

The other day I was debating with a Protestant about Salvation and the I brought up the topic divorce and remarriage and I made a comment of something along the lines of “If you took what Jesus said literally you would be better than much of the Catholic Hierarchy.” Was the detraction against the Catholic Hierarchy? Was it Impiety (disrespect for one’s authority figures)?

I’m not sure I have an answer for you because I wasn’t there, I didn’t hear the tone, the whole conversation, nor do I know about your experiences with the hierarchy of the Catholic Church and so on… However I can say that one should not take to speaking against any of our priests or religious lightly. Jesus Himself tells us through the mystics and Saints that we are never to attack, or reprimand His religious, simply pray for them and bring the situations you find to His feet. He will handle the rest.

Do I think you sinned, again I’m not sure but I do not think it was a mortal sin, just in the future keep in mind that these people have dedicated their lives to serving God and us. They are only human and they are, all of them, sinners.
