Is this disobedience or a sin?

For example a son was ordered by his mother to put the trash on Trashcan A. So, the son obeyed to put the trash out but the son rather put the trash on Trashcan B. Is there some sin on this? We can see on this situation that the son at least obeyed his mother. What do you think? This sounds scrupulous but I need an answer.

Depends.

Let’s say the family puts compostable items in one bin and recycle items in another. Son is surly and thinks that is dumb so he throws all of the food waste into the recycle bin. That would be disobedience.

On the other hand, if the family has two bins because they generate a lot of trash, son simply opened a bin and threw in the trash - then realized mom wanted it in the other bin, that is simply a mistake.

Honest mistake and/or brain fog? Prolly not a sin.

An attempt at defiance ( she can make me take out the trash but she doesn’t control my every move , so there!). A sin

Of course I don’t know the particulars of the situation, but it seems to me that if the mother specified Trashcan A, there is likely some reason for it. If the son decided to use Trashcan B, he may have been thinking:
  • “I’d rather not walk all the way to Trashcan A, so I’ll just use this one” which could be laziness;
  • “She told me Trashcan A but I don’t care, I’ll use this one” which could be defiance;
  • “It won’t make a difference which one I use [or a situation like the one in the first reply], so I’ll use this one” which might be just an honest mistake;
or some combination of the above.

So it looks like this could be sinful to some degree, or there could be no sin. It would depend on what the son’s intentions were and how well he understood the situation.
