Is this disrespectful to Mormons?

I went through this about 15 years ago when I gathered from somewhere (I can’t remember where) that they didn’t prefer Mormon, but rather LDS. I used LDS for awhile, but when I asked my Mormon roommate at the time, he said Mormon was completely fine, so I switched back to that.
I dug back to see where I had encountered this before. They requested that people make the name shift back in 2001 in the lead-up to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. So, to be fair, this isn’t coming out of nowhere, as a few people have suggested. On the other hand, they certainly went the other way in their marketing efforts over the intervening years, so it’s quite confusing.

I asked my Mormon friend on Saturday what he thought of it. He said he didn’t really think there was a good reason to make the change. I asked if he thought it would “take” and he said, internally it definitely would. But outside of their church, he expects everyone to keep saying Mormon, as will he.

So instead of saying someone’s a Mormon we say they are Church of Jesus, or am I mistaken?

Everyone seems to be missing that "Latter-day Saints” will be an acceptable shorthand, which negates most of the “I can’t call them 'The Church’ or ‘of Jesus’” complaints.
From ‘Mormon Tabernacle Choir renamed as church shifts away from ‘Mormon’ label’:

The name change comes as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is distancing itself from shorthand labels such as “Mormon” and “LDS.”

[Church President Russell M. Nelson] issued guidelines saying that “Latter-day Saints” was acceptable shorthand.

As a former Mormon I will continue to use the phrase Mormon Church unless I am in the presence of a member who finds that objectionable. If they do and voice such objection, I will then use something along the lines of “members of your belief system” Or “members of your faith”

They did try this back when I was a member, and it didn’t really take root at the time. Their present day president seems to be taking a much harder stance on it.

I find it very sad indeed that the tabernacle choir changed it’s name. I guess tradition doesn’t mean as much to them as it does to we Catholics.

When Amazon had it’s discussion forums, the Mormons who posted there were very insistent that we not call them Mormons but Latter-Day Saints. They didn’t even want to be called LDS. I said, “You can call yourselves whatever you want. You’re still Mormons and always will be.”

No, I just told them very matter of fact.

Besides, it was several years ago. So they must’ve had it in the planning stages for awhile and are only now putting it into practice.

Well, someone’s got to be honest with them
about their history because they sure weren’t able to be honest with us about it.

They can say the same thing about Catholics. They believe differently than you do. You believe differently than them.

Is it disrespectful if I continue to call them Mormons?
Maybe, but they’re demanding that everyone call them “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” or for short “The Church of Jesus Christ.” And only that. They are bound to be disappointed.

I don’t believe they are the Church of Jesus Christ, so why would I call them that?

Not the people, the religion. I work for a JW, and he’s a great boss; we get along fine. He’s a loving father, an attentive and kind boss, and is always willing to help anyone who needs it.

That doesn’t change the fact that his religion is a direct attack against Christ’s divinity.

Judaism is not a direct attack against Christ’s divinity. Though they do reject it, that rejection is not one of the foundational principles of their faith. The same is not true of Mormonism, JW’s, and Muslims; all of whose faith began with the assertion that Jesus is not divine.

Call it harsh all you like; sometimes reality is harsh.

Not really an apt analogy. Papist is a derogatory. Mormon is not and was used by the LDS Church as recently as last week in their own marketing materials, web addresses, group names, etc…

A better analogy is if the Catholic Church started insisting on being called Christ’s Church exclusively and disallowed Catholic or Roman Catholic.

If it’s so derogatory, why were they running a website called Mormon.org last week? Or had their biggest choir go by “Mormon Tabernacle Choir” for more than a century? They don’t consider it derogatory. They are just engaging in a new form of marketing.

Fine and dandy, thank you.

And thank you for the compliment.😀

They haven’t changed the name of the website yet. It’ll be like IHOP when they changed their name to IHOB to spotlight their burgers.

Total backfire.
